The Dell has shipped! Those fuckers sent it out in less than 24 hours from when I placed my order. Let's hope this is indicative of the entire process of moving Jackassery over to the new hardware.

Looks like we had another crash this morning sometime around 6AM Central time - according to the logs, it looks like Fatty may have been uploading a picture at that time (doesn't look like your fault though, Fats!) Anyway, he mailed it to me along with the description so I posted it for him since he might not get a chance to do it before he goes to Rome.
I am getting pretty sick of the problems this server is giving me, but hopefully that Dell will get here early next week and I can set about the arduous process of configuring it to run the site.

We had another fairly catastrophic crash last night. I have no idea what happened, but the entire Linux machine (not just the webserver) crashed, couldn't even get a directory listing when I saw it this morning. Anyway, I rebooted and it's all back up now.
UPS claims that my Dell will be here today (whether anyone will be here to sign for it is another story) and my backup process is tight so if we have any more hardware-related downtime it will only be during the configuration phase of the new server.

Okay, the new Jackassery Server is configured! I can't believe how quickly I was able to get it up and running (except for a small snafu involving losing my Linux install disks) - it helps that I can do most of it from work. Anyway, everything appears to be functional but for now we're running on the old server. When I am a bit more comfortable, we'll switch over for a day or two and make sure we're running smoothly. If so, the old server will then become my new kitchen computer.

Sweet! And a kitchen computer? What for? Are you programming the Rosstation to make coffee and a bagel for you in the morning?
By the way, last week I finally upgraded my computer to a sexy 2.5 gig AMD processor. My machine is hauling ass right now.

Ross - A kitchen computer? Now who was making fun of my xbox in the shitter? Congats and t'anks for keepin' the site chugging along. I know all this jackassery, bullshittery and general tomfoolery can wear out any setup after awhile.
Swerb - Time to upgrade the SwerbBox! This week: Circuit City has 120 gig HDD for $39.99 (after rebates) and CompUSA has 250 gig(!!) for $129.99 (NO rebates required!).
And everyone - Let's not forget that FeralWill is coming home Aug 23-Sep 9. We need to setup at least ONE DEFINATE GAMING NIGHT. Probably a Saturday? Any preferences, people?

The kitchen computer will exist simply because the old Jackassery box needs love too. So I picked up a (relatively) cheap 17" LCD monitor ($250) and once we switch JA over, I'll just load Windows on the old machine and I'll be good to go. It'll be basically for sitting at the counter and surfing the web. Gratutitous, I know, but that's who I am. Or as H.I. McDunnough would say, "That there's what it is!" I'll throw in a pic when it's finished.
And I saw that Circuit City deal on the 120 just after I paid $50 at Fry's for the same drive. Oh well, it's ten bucks. But it's the principal. By the way, Fry's is the greatest computer/technology store of all time. They're slowing expanding east and ours is in the burbs but it's literally so huge that you could spend four or five hours in it and not see everything. Pappa like.
As for FeralFatty, I think I could schedule a GR visit on the weekend of the 28th - I have a doctor's appointment on the morning of 27th and I might just take the whole day off and leave after the appointment.

Keep your fingers crossed - we are now running on new hardware. If anything at all goes nutty on you, do not hesitate to tell me!

The Fatty update worked well.... So far so good. Glad it went so well. OR are we speaking too soon......
A kitchen computer? Well why not, but I'd think a boot-up when you but a boot-down is better. Why not a wall mounted, flat screen in the bathroom with a wireless keyboard. I bet it will get more use. You just can't think about keyboard hygine. I know I am going to have one!

Aha! I see a small error. Looks like my apostrophes and dashes are not recongized and are replaced with ?. Now that I think of it and it is a easy fix, The Fatty Photo Record has never accepted new paragraphs - that is the reason for the huge mass of text. I forget if I asked this of you before and it was too much work. I like to use white space, lots of space, you know. It makes you feel a part of the world!
I can easily fix the whitespace (I think) but the ?'s are a mystery to me as well. I'm cornfused about it. I'll see what I can do, though.
And why is it that my own apostrophes and dashes ''' --- are working fine? Could it be a European issue?
Okay, I think I fixed the whitespace. Only problem is that your last 2 fatty photos didn't have any. Prior ones did, though:
http://www.jackassery.com/fatty.jsp?id=30
http://www.jackassery.com/fatty.jsp?id=33
Anyway, I'm wanting to chalk both the ?'s and the lack of whitespace to the European style, but I dunno if I fully can. I could swear I saw the ?'s on your last photo too but now I can't, so something else may be fishy. Anyway, at least the photo descriptions look a bit nicer, you can go back to copious whitespace in your descriptions.

Hmmmm, the ?? are back. I don't think it is a problem on my end. I am using my laptop, not a eurotrash computer. I type my story in Word, then cut and paste it in. I have been doing it that way for 4 or 5 entries with no problems until the switchover. From a troubleshooting perspective.... I think the problem is on your end.
No fingerpointing, but JOHNSON, we pay you too much for this shit to happen!
Thanks for the whitespace! I got lazy with the 2 entries you mentioned and didn't use the enter key. I know this problem will bug you until solved, so sorry for the added brainload ;)

I'm incredulous that it's on this end - after all, it never happens to anyone else. Try typing it up in another program other than Word, like notepad and pasting from that. Are you sure that there are no ?'s when you paste into the Jackassery text box? Bottom line: I really don't know how to begin to troubleshoot this one. I will run a couple of tests cutting/pasting from Word, but I can't see how this one isn't "user error". :)

Proving once again that "idiot proof" doesn't equate with "Fatty proof." :)

Nothing is proven! I fully believe that it's possible that Fatty is right - I just can't see how at this time.
Maybe JA just doesn't like Fatty's choice of font. We run into similar problems when translating text at the Press - we get some garbled code and stuff sneaking into the document. Typing on a basic wordpad or text file seems to help.

Exactly, Swerb. That's exactly what I was thinking, yet too unarticulate to say.

Fornication senario one - I will type in the offending apostrophe here:
'''''''''''''''''
That worked. Scenario Two, I am typing the offending apostrophe in word and will paste them in
????????????
That should have fucked up. Hmmmmmm. Let me try it again within a text message like before
Ain¡¦t that cool about the Boy¡¦s gay shoes ?º

Ah-ha!!!!! We have fuckup. Let me try one more thing in the interest of knowledge
Ain¡¦t it cool with the Boy¡¦s gay shoes ?º
Third Scenario, Typing them into Notepad:
Ain't it cool with the Boy's cool shoes :)
Excellent work, Watson. We now have the culprit.
Yepper - It only happens with Word and only if I save the text first. If I just cut and paste, it is cool. I wonder if Word saves some funny business that is not compatable with JA????
It's not that it's not compatible with JA, it's that's it's not compatible with being cut-and-pasted into web pages in general. I don't do any fancy processing of the text at all, other than embed links into URLs that are typed into messages.
But yeah, as a general rule, Word is a bad program to cut-and-paste from unless you're pasting into another Microsoft product (IE doesn't count).

There you have it nerdlings, another computer quirk embedded into your memories. Now someday you can impress others when you tell them why their posting screwed up.
Ross, I will keep fucking shite up, you keep figurin' it out - Team Troubleshoot!

I think I prefer "Team Fornication" - but yeah, I'm with you.

I just implemented some behind-the-scenes upgrades to the site regarding uploading and viewing uploaded photos - you shouldn't notice any changes if I did it right. But report any problems you have, please.
Thank you,
The Management
