Balloon FAIL

If you haven't seen this yet, it's worth the 2:33.  Very likely the funniest thing I have ever seen.  You have to listen to his commentary throughout...

Really? The funniest thing you've ever seen?

From: Ross Entered on: December 5, 2008 12:16 PM

I agree, it's pretty amusing but far from the funniest thing I've ever seen.  Spider, did I miss something he said?  He just sounded like a huge dork trying narrate himself through a stupid gimmick.

From: RobotSpider Entered on: December 5, 2008 12:43 PM

Ok, so I hyped it a bit.  But some of the things I caught were:

"This is my second attempt, this is a larger balloon... made in South America."

"Dangit, this is all I need now."

"...this is why I need a spotter..."

As a friend of mine put it, "Ok, so even if it worked, then what?  You're inside a balloon..."

From: Jackzilla Entered on: December 5, 2008 4:21 PM

FAIL

I'm afraid that one was a bit over-hyped, Spider.  Don't feel bad though:  Your hit-to-miss ratio for JA posts is still better than most!

From: Bunky Entered on: December 5, 2008 4:49 PM
I still found it a bit amusing since he spent all this energy on a balloon. Who climbs inside a balloon?

From: BigFatty Entered on: December 7, 2008 9:01 AM

What really makes this video amusing is listening to his comments and trying to relate them back to that guy's life.  This is his second attempt.  What happend with the first?  Why are South American balloons better?  How come this balloon trick is his hobby?

From: Ross Entered on: December 7, 2008 9:52 AM

Right - I want to know what his motivation really is.  In his mind, if he pulls this off, is this somehow going to garner him the respect he deserves?

From: Jackzilla Entered on: December 7, 2008 10:14 AM

Really?  Y'all are still evaluating this one?  You probably think 30 Rock is funnier than The Office too...

HA HA HA HA!!!

Oh, now you are going to be 'I'm The Office fan'.  I told to watch it so many times, then once you finally did, you gave it the - meh.  Plus, have you even watched the original British ones?  You are a Jackie-come-lately, I only like the Lions when they are winning guy.

I've been an Office fan, BEFORE it was even in the US.  So, I have no problems telling you that 30 Rock is funnier than The Office.

Back to the balloon guy..  Plus, how did he decide that his second attempt warranted being immortalized?  What was he planning on doing that necessitated being recorded?  My thoughts are he was just going to crawl inside the balloon.  OK.....  that has been done plenty of times.  In his situation, it would be very anti-climatic.  All you would see is a big balloon and hear his voice 'OK, I am entirely inside the ballon now.  It seems I need to stick with the South American variety of large balloons.'  There are photos on the back wall.  He has kids it seems.  Plus there is a Marine photo.  I will assume it is not him.

I also liked him reconsidering having used a spotter.  Having a balloon spotter is a no-brainer.

I've admitted to not instantly being drawn into The Office.  It definately requires a few shows under your belt to get the characters down.  I'm a Jackie-come-lately who only likes things cuz they're popular?  Yeah, sure.

By the way, the US and British shows are completely different.  I realize the US one is based on the British one but it's far from being the same show.  So you were a fan of the US one before it even existed?  Wow - That's impressive!  And for the record, I couldn't get through the British one -- I'm sure it's funny, but I couldn't understand a damn word.  It is their language, right?  How come I can't understand them?

Sorry, go back to talking about the backstory of balloon guy.  It has as many layers open to discussion as the Matrix, it would seem...

I'm afraid that's not the concensus in Lowell.  Bells in fact commented on whether there was anything funny in the last episode at all (I wouldn't be that harsh, but it hardly has the out-loud-laughs of The Office for all of us).  I'm not sure Bells would watch at all if he didn't want to see Tina Fey's boobies.  We all find Tracy Morgan annoying -- his whole getto retard speech pattern -- but I think that's a hit with you guys.

For me the show is basically funny because of Lemon, Jack and the intern.  You could throw Morgan, hat-guy, etc. out the window as far as I'm concerned.  Where as I find every character on The Office amusing (I love that Toby is back!).

From: BigFatty Entered on: December 7, 2008 1:06 PM

You Lowell turds have been breathing too much of that King's Mill flour dust.  Admittedly, Tracy Morgan has gone swiftly south with his character from the first season.  Lemon, Jack, and Kenneth are what make the show.  The only other improvement would to show Lemon's assistant, MUCH more.  Good lord she is smokin.  Nothing against The Office, it just doesn't have the same bust out laughing, humor.

As far as the US and British Shows being completely different.  Maybe now, negro, but the first season was an exact copy of the British show.  So I'll chalk your comment up to - you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

From: Ross Entered on: December 7, 2008 4:14 PM

Even Tracy Morgan is funnier than the ultra-lame-ass Jim-and-Pam storyline.

From: Bunky Entered on: December 7, 2008 5:48 PM

The Office is freaking hysterical. I laugh every week on that show, and it is hit or miss on 30 Rock.

I agree with Jack. Every character on The Office is amusing, while 30 Rock has only a few that carry the show.

Tracy Morgan is not funny.

Right on, Fatty!  I can see how some don't find it as funny as I did.  But if you view this as a small, 2 minute window into this guy's life, there's so much there.  You've got to wonder what happened during the first attempt.  Did it end badly?  Why is there no U.S. balloon manufacturer that will step up and endorse this man's... er... hobby?  When he says, "this is all I need now..", it's as though this was on his "Things That Can Go Wrong" list.

Yeah, but at least the layers in the 'balloon guy' video aren't needlessly complex, painfully contrived, and shoe-horned into an otherwise enjoyable sci-fi movie.

Yeah, the Jim/Pam storyline is definitely the weakest sub-plot in the show.  I like the show, but the Jim/Pam thing has derailed.

I do regard Crockett's video as somewhat amusing though. Not all time mind you but it made me grin a bit.

Ross: Posting FAIL!

From: Ross Entered on: December 9, 2008 7:36 AM

Oh, and speaking of which sitcoms are funnier than which, I will actually break ranks and say that as of late I tend to find "How I Met Your Mother" generally funnier than either The Office or 30 Rock.  Doogie is a comedic genius, and there are always several laugh-out-loud moments per episode.

From: Bunky Entered on: December 9, 2008 9:22 AM

I have never watched the show, but my husband does and I hear him cracking up in the other room when it is on. He said the same thing to me about Doogie last week...

From: Jackzilla Entered on: December 9, 2008 10:13 AM

What about Two & A Half Men?  A buddy of mine was in yesterday and told me he loves that show.  Me?  I refuse to watch it just based on the fact that Charlie Sheen is always wearing shorts.  "I'm out!"  just based on that alone.

What are the all-time best comedies?  Shows that you can still watch today and laugh:  Of course Seinfeld.  But I would also offer up Everybody Loves Raymond.  Probably not hip -- But that show cracks me up.  All In The Family was often genius and still is more cutting edge that most TV today.  I'm due for re-watching Arrested Development sometime too.

Really?  That's enough?  Wouldn't you wear shorts all the time if you lived on the beach?  I'm not saying it's a great show, although I do find it entertaining occasionally in small doses, but your reason for disliking it makes no sense.

You should be refusing it because you'd rather watch Earth 2.  I don't think anybody wears shorts on that show by the way.

Actually, I find it more interesting that the Danish can air a commerical with such content. Our whole country went whole ape shit when Janet "Ms. Jackson if you are Nasty" Jackson had her "wardrobe malfunction."

I recently DL'd this current season of HIMYM.  Thanks for the heads up on that, Berts.  It is a funny show.  Doogie is the man, plus they sprinkle in enough eye-candy to make a good show out of it.  I'll go back and get the rest of the older seasons.

Rad - Two and a half men stink worse than my drawers in the JC Penny's restroom garbage.

For those of you looking for something a little different...  There is this show called The IT Crowd.  It is a little amatuerish at times, and some of the episodes are very bad.  But there are a few that are pretty original and funny.  One in the first season has one of the guys getting caught using the handicap stall, so he makes up a story that someone stole his wheelchair.  One from this season has the IT nerds learning some 'Man phrases' so that can survive in short social situations at bars.  I guess I am liking this show because it is a breath of fresh air.  I don't see everyone liking these, but if you are tired of some of the old crap, it might be worth exploring.  Robot - it just might be your brand of justice.

I am with Ross in the 30 Rock camp.  Baldwin is way beyond any character on The Office.  I've been a fan of The Office for years - even watched the British series before the US one, but still - I'd watch 30 Rock before The Office.  Yes, they are 2 different types of humor.. but a man has a right to pick his favorites!

A new contender for fav comedy series for Bells and I:  Curb Your Enthusiasm.  Bells likes it better than The Office (an assertion I find hard to argue with).  We just finished up the 7th season (that just ended with the Seinfeld reunion).  This series is pretty, pretty, pretty sweet and very Seinfeld-like actually.
