As we all know, Pearl Jam is the greatest band on earth. They just released a new single for their new Album that comes out in 2 months. It's an anti-war song and I LIKE IT! They put it up for a free download on their website, so I'm putting it on mine, where I know only Swerb will be interested in hearing it:

Another sweet, heavy PJ rocker. You know the intense songs are my favorites... this one will shred live, I bet. Thanks for posting it. Oh, still no final word on the concert, but I'll keep you posted if I know anything.

The the whole time I'm listening to it I'm picturing how great it will be live. Can't wait for the tour...

Swerb, your powers are weak old man:

They will indeed be visiting GR on May 19 and Chicago on May 16! This is still somewhat tenuous and not official yet but it looks like it will be soon. If the previous policy for the Ten Club holds, I should be able to get tickets for both shows.

Sweet! Yes, my powers are weak. I am limited to press releases, whereas you are a decade-long fan club member. Still, you heard the unofficial news here first, a couple weeks back.

From: Ross Entered on: March 9, 2006 1:25 PM
Well, I *think* I got tix to Chicago. Their site was suh-lammed when they went on sale today.... and then it said "Sold Out" on Chicago tickets before I had successfully gotten logged in and into my shopping cart, as the site was running so slowly. Needless to say, I was livid and on the verge of slaughtering nearby coworkers. I'd retry, only to have my login forgotten, or the site behaving so strangely as to lose my order, forget my address, give me errors that didn't make any sense, etc. I'd start over, and sometimes it said they were sold out, but sometimes it would let me start the purchase process again.

Finally, I got to the point where it asked for my credit card info. I put it in, and got a screen saying simply "Your order has been processed," with a link back to the main site. No confirm number, and no email (yet). I was still pretty unsure at this point but the site traffic apparently soon slackened off, and if I try to check out with more Chicago tickets in my cart, they stop me and say that only one ticket pair can be purchased per fan club member. So that's my best evidence that I should have tickets coming.

Now to repeat for GR tomorrow...

What annoys me about this process is that although seats are assigned based on seniority, ticket availability is not, they're first-come-first-served. So since they technically made the announcement about the presale on Monday, someone could have joined the fan club that day and been eligible for tickets the same as me. This is the first time that I've been in jeopardy of not getting fan club tickets. Not fun.

From: Ross Entered on: March 10, 2006 12:13 PM
Detroit tickets purchased. Got all the way thru buying GR tickets only to have it tell me to login at the end and lose my order. Now it says out of stock. So I went back and got tix for Detroit, no problem. Now just retrying on GR until something changes. Keep your fingers crossed...

I watched SNL for the first time in a long time. Yep, it still sucks royal turds. In one hour, they managed to cram in 3 lame skits, a musical guest, and their signature SNL news. Wow. So in the next half hour they put in another Pearl Jam and 2 more skits. How can this even be considered a comedy show anymore? The first skit of a MTV show was so devoid of humor, I swore obituary writers were on the payroll. Debbie Downer? Really? These are the funny talented people that SNL has now? The skits remind me of bad junior-high skits that you throw together as group ice breakers, when you only have 5 minutes to put something together.

Saturday Night Lame is so poorly done now that it pisses me off. C'mon, it is not that hard to find funny shit to do!

From: Ross Entered on: April 16, 2006 12:13 PM
But the real question is: how was Pearl Jam? I'm at Heather's family's place - we were at the bar last night and I could see it on but not hear it. I can't to get home and fast forward thru all the "funny skits" to see PJ play.

Hey, my buddy asked me if wanted to see Pearl Jam in LA. I figured what the hell. He bought the tickets so I guess I'm checking them out in July. I hear they're pretty good?

Shit negro, if I knew you wanted to see Pearl Jam, I'd have gotten some tix in San Diego (best seats in the house) and invited myself over.

I must say, that is pretty freaking awesome, Jack.

From: Ross Entered on: April 21, 2006 12:29 PM
I must reiterate just how much I love this Pearl Jam album. This might be better than Yield. They always grow on me and this is no exception - but I already pretty much loved it out of the gate, which wasn't the case with their previous album, which I now like quite a bit. These fuckers are just plain awesome.

I explained to a friend of mine recently that I "get religion" now. I know that on pretty much any objective level you want to pick (except for perhaps loyalty to fans and vice-versa), Pearl Jam is not necessarily the best band in the world. But as the reasoning part of me intellectually understands this, most of me will hear none of it. These guys are the best, plain and simple, and nothing you can say can convince me otherwise. In other words, I am a religious zealot, and my religion is Pearl Jamism.

And you know what? I like it that way. I realize I'm irrational in this respect. But the key difference is that my affinity for this band doesn't influence me in any substantial way like voting or killing people in their name.

When I saw Pearl Jam for the first time, back in 1994 , it was a true religious experience. After having listened to the recording hundreds of times, when I finally heard Eddie Vedder - a few scant yards away from me - utter the opening wail to "Black," I understood how all those morons can watch a prayer revival and get sucked in. When I told a religious friend of mine about that experience being the closest thing I'd known to religion, she said that was "sad." But I don't think so. I think it's literally identical.

I am seeing them six times this tour (a personal record), and Heather thinks I'm "psycho". But as another fellow Pearl Jam megafan friend of mine told me (who is also seeing them six times this tour), "Just think, at least 6 times this summer you're gonna have a kick ass time."

Rationale enough for me.

By the way, this is a great interview with Vedder:

Bert - six times? Two in Chicago, one in GR, one in Detroit - where else?

But yeah, it's funny you feel that way about Pearl Jam, because that's very similar to the way I feel about Tool. I was shellshocked after seeing them live (funny enough, in '94 as well) and have since become a slobbering "convert." They can do no wrong. Ever. My rational self is telling me the new album fizzles during the last half, but my irrational appreciation for the band tells me, listen to it another 25 times or so, and it'll sink in. I would NEVER give another band so much devotion. Not to get too metaphysical here, but I think music in general can appeal to the irrational portions of our brains - what else can intangibly invoke passion to the point of physical response (goosebumps, elation, whatever) but a fucking kickass song?

By the way, I'm going to try to get tickets to see Tool's Detroit concert, too. I really don't have the money, but you know, fuck it!

From: Ross Entered on: April 21, 2006 12:13 PM
Vegas on July 6, and Summerfest in Milwaukee (with Tom Petty) on June 30. They're playing there on the 29th, too, but that's a Thursday and I am already taking several days off work for this tour. I feel like a Deadhead.

Bert - Impressive. You're giving me some real competition for all the times I've seen Prince live. It's well over a dozen. I should try to figure it out sometime. My list would include a lot of real small shows too (Studio 54 in MGM Vegas and several at his Paisley Park studios). Several times front row. I think I'm a purplehead (or symbolhead).

Pass the peanut butter.

Bert - Yes, Prince's club (www.npgmusicclub.com) offers the best seats at concerts. Ticketmaster is for suckers!

One of the sweeter deals offered was 4 or so years ago: $70 for a week-long (7 days!!!) party pass at Paisley Park. Each DAY there were tours of the studios and sound stages and chat sessions with musicians and engineers. Each NIGHT there was an opening artist, then Prince would play for a couple hours, with each night being a different theme (rock, funk, jazz, his first live acoustic show, etc). That was a crazy week. Up late, sleep in, bop around MPLS a bit, then back to party at the Park!

Ang & I have had a ton of Prince-related adventures...

From: Ross Entered on: April 21, 2006 7:29 PM
Wow, Pearl Jam's fan club ( www.tenclub.net ) also offers the best seats at shows (hence the six times this tour) but I suppose nothing can rival the level of fan involvement that Prince offers. Most impressive.

Towards the end of the clip, you have to turn it up pretty loud - Maynard whispers:
"Work hard, stay in school, listen to your mother, your father is right."

Fucking hilarious.

I have long since discounted Rolling Stone as a knob-jobber rag (every review of a major artist's album is positive), so excuse my skepticism (this is sorta where Ross + Pearl Jam = religion, considering our past discussions about said magazine)... but yeah, that review is pretty astute, and I agre with him. Also, I have a whole new appreciation for the new album, listening to it (right now) in sequence in non-shite sound quality...

I love this:

To notice that while the rest of the rock world has burnt out and faded with the longevity of a Gap ad, Pearl Jam has kept doing what they do best. Rocking out. Releasing records and official bootlegs. Selling out arenas in city after city. Playing two-hour-plus live shows, each one different, unique and powerful. Basically, just keeping it real.

In fact, there isn?t another rock band in the world today that can lay claim to the following: the ability to sell out multiple nights in an arena in a major-market city (which is the equivalent of selling 60,000 tickets to 60,000 unique fans in a single town), yet somehow be deemed ?unpopular? or ?irrelevant? by the mainstream press.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 25, 2006 10:59 AM
Actually, Bert, that last paragraph could apply to Prince too. His "Musicology" was the #1 tour in 2004. He sold out arenas all year including 5 sold out shows at LA's Staples Center (the first act to do so). And this happened with basically no support from radio.

From: Ross Entered on: April 25, 2006 12:20 PM
You're already the third person I've seen say that about their favorite band (U2, Bon Jovi, Prince). Read the end of the last sentence, though. I'd say that Pearl Jam is off the press's radar to much greater extent than any of them - that's the point - not that they can sell out arenas. Lots of acts can do that.

Hell, a guy I work with, who is a self-confessed music lover, has his own band, etc., the other day heard me ranting and raving about PJ and asked if there were actually still together anymore. Don't think the same would be said of U2, Bon Jovi, or Prince.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 25, 2006 2:12 PM
Bert - I think a lot of people would've said Prince was "unpopular" or "irrelevant" before 2004. Then he had the biggest tour of the year. Sure sounds like that second paragraph fits to me! :P

To quote them again:

And are we gaming Saturday? We gotta make plans!

From: Ross Entered on: May 15, 2006 10:44 AM

Yep, I'm leaving Friday, probably late morning, to beat the traffic. When will you be around?

I think Zilla is planning for a gaming session Saturday, no?

Fatty is in charge of - what else - foodstuffs. Anyone got any places that we have to try?

From: Swerb Entered on: May 15, 2006 10:49 AM

I'm not certain what my schedule is Friday yet - I may have to work for a few hours at Vertigo in the afternoon (still ironing out my schedule), but if so, I'll be done by 4 or 5.

I keep telling Fatty about this dingy place called Putt Putts Bar that has a killer burger, but I haven't had time to meet him for lunch there... but I'll let him be in charge of such decisions.

Yes, I'm expecting some guests at the ZAGNUT Saturday night! Fatty! Bells! Bert! Slerp!

We now have 8 TVs available in the basement. We can do a little xbox Halo/ Halo2/ Ghost/ Whatever or Xbox 360 up on the big screen (with system link on a couple systems down stairs). Lots of options! I'll ask Radmobile & Crew out too (they have 360's that they can bring). No lilgurl this time, so you can breath a sigh of relief.

I'll be at Rookies until 5pm. If people want to stop out before close we can all grab a bite to eat after I close like we've done before.

This is a long and jumpled thread now..... but it did have references to how crappy SNL has been. I have been really enjoying some BBC comedy shows that SNL writers should definately watch and learn. They are not live shows, but they are skit based. Two of my recent favorites are 'Little Britian' and 'The League of Ordinary Gentlemen'. Once you get passed them being British, you might find them outrageously hilarious. Remember, 'The Office' was created in Britian and was then recreated in the States. SNL - are you listening?? They are worth a download.

From: Ross Entered on: November 12, 2006 7:35 AM

Working with many brits over the years, I've seen both League of Gentlemen and Little Britain. Heather and I frickin love Little Britain. The fat guy on there is so funny that he's almost inhuman. Two best characters: Andy, the wheelchair-bound semi-retard, and Vicki, the UK's answer to a Springer-show guest.

They play it on BBC America here, too. One way or another, everyone should get their hands on that show.
