Rumor has it that Fatty is bringin' several of these home from France! One for everybody!

From: Ross Entered on: March 29, 2004 10:08 AM
Pretty slick. But aren't the modders out there coming up with even cooler shit than this themselves?

From: The Bone Entered on: March 29, 2004 8:07 PM
Are they going for the new low price of $150?

From: Jackzilla Entered on: March 30, 2004 8:52 AM
Bone - Yep. $149.95 for a brand new xbox or $129.95 for the refurbs at EBGames!

From: Ross Entered on: March 30, 2004 9:13 AM
Including this crystal one?

From: Jackzilla Entered on: March 30, 2004 10:42 AM
BigFatty quoted me $250 for crystal xbox (it's available in France). I think that sumbitch is marking it up! Why do I gotta finance his vacation!?!

The $250 includes two controllers, but DAMN! And what about the power? How hard would it be to convert it to be US compatible?

Anyone drink Mountain Dew? 550 DewU points gets you the Limited Edition Green box. Too bad Squirt doesn't have a promotion like that. I'd be driving the freekin' Ruby Red Squirt Edition Saturn by now! :)

From: Ross Entered on: March 30, 2004 11:16 AM
Can you get DewU points from the cans? We have free soda in our fridge here at work, I could try to look into scamming points somehow.

From: The Bone Entered on: March 30, 2004 11:32 AM
$250 is bullshit!

From: Jackzilla Entered on: March 30, 2004 4:05 PM
You can also get a DewU point if you send in a postcard. How much are postcards to mail? 29 cents? Let's see... (550 postcards) x (.29 postage) = $159.50 for a green xbox! Not bad! Who wants to try it?

From: BigFatty Entered on: March 31, 2004 3:26 PM
I just saw the limited verison in stores. It costs 200 euros. I might be able to get the 20% VAT refunded since I am American. With the exchange rate it will be around $200. If you want it decide. It will be difficult for me to transport a big ass Xbox box and everything else I'm bringing home, but I'll do it. Thomas said you can buy the clear cases on European Ebays. Jack, I tried calling you at the store today, but no answer. I need a few days to get it. Personally, its a risk because we don't know about the power deal - I'd look into the clear cases on ebay.

From: Ross Entered on: March 31, 2004 5:48 PM
That's actually about $220 if you take off 20%, which is absurd compared to the $150 you can pay for a nice black box here.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: March 31, 2004 6:03 PM
You do get two controllers... so it's like $180 retail here. But still! Ebay won't be any cheaper either. Oh well. I guess it's what's in the inside of your xbox that counts.

From: Swerb Entered on: March 31, 2004 10:35 PM
I can't believe you guys are getting so worked up about Barbieing up your Xboxes. What's next? Ground effects? A spoiler? Are you going to take your Xbox out for a night on the town, then take it home and hope to get some? Sheez.

From: Ross Entered on: March 31, 2004 10:50 PM
Mine gave it up to me on the first night. Then I knock her around some, and she begs me for more.

Wait, what were we talking about again?

From: Jackzilla Entered on: March 31, 2004 11:08 PM
Swerb - a spoiler would be sweet! Neon lights on the bottom of the xbox would really make it rad too. Word on the street is that Fatty is gonna put a "love hole" in his box when he gets home. It'll be like that movie "Cherry 2000" except his xbox won't look like a hot, young, pre-Don Johnson Melany Griffith.

Hey Ross -- on a totally unrelated topic... We're getting ready to move next week and have been contacting all the utility companies and discovered that SBC is offering DSL broadband in Lowell now. It's $28 vs. Lowell Cable's $50 (monthly). I'm ignorant on this. Is DSL sweeter than cable? My impression is that it is so we're planning on switching over. I know my connection speed rated the lowest of all of us here on that one web-site that measures your broadband speed. Any comments or suggestions that would help prevent me from fornicating the process would be appreciated.

From: Ross Entered on: April 1, 2004 7:22 AM
Jack - generally speaking, DSL is NOT sweeter than cable. However, there certainly could be instances where it is. Cable usually has higher bandwidth (speeds) than DSL, though DSL sometimes has different pricing plans based on bandwidth. Now, your Lowell cable could have been slow either because Lowell sucks, or it could have been because of the strength of the cable signal in or near your house.

The trick here is to find out what kind of bandwidth they are claiming to provide. This isn't always easy. None of these companies will guarantee anything but they will often give you a ballpark. For instance, I looked at SBC's site and saw this, regarding their 384kbps - 1.5Mbps (make sure you get this plan rather than just the 384 or else it will probably be even slower than before):

1Service may not be available in all areas. Actual downstream and upstream throughput speeds will vary. The downstream and upstream access speed or sync rate is measured between network interface device at customer's location and the DSL-equipped Central Office or Remote Terminal. The actual speed achieved will depend on several factors, including line conditions and loop length.

Cable will say a similar thing, and will also probably provide the upper end of this range (1.5Mbps). So I'd say that if you're unhappy with your cable dudes, go for it. But the bottom line is that there are no guarantees in this biz. That said, both Heather and her mom have or have had SBC DSL and it seems to be pretty fast.

Also, a good site for info on ISPs is Broadband Reports.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 1, 2004 8:29 AM
Ross - Thanks for the info. I think we'll just give the DSL a shot. It's $20 cheaper a month and if I show them that I'm switching from another service, I get the first two months for free. If it's completely heinous I'll go back to cable.

We now resume to our regularly scheduled discussion of xbox porn...

I was just at EBgames today to buy another refurb xbox ($129.95... and it included a Samsung DVD drive, which sell for $100+ on ebay alone). ANYWAYS... I was talking to the clerk about the limited edition boxes and he mentioned that the US is getting one in about 2 weeks! It'll be a Halo Limited Edition Xbox, all green including the controller, come with Halo as a pack-in and sell for $170. Hmmm... I wonder what KIND of green it'll be? Probably not the Mountain Dew green, but who knows! :)

This is the first I've heard of this. But he seemed to know what he was talking about (he didn't seem to be suffering from RadioShackClerk-itis).

From: Ross Entered on: April 1, 2004 10:52 AM
Pretty sweet. But in all honesty, what use do you have for YET ANOTHER xbox in your house? I realize I'm speaking as a man with a hacked xbox, a hacked Tivo, and 5 computers in the house, but still...

From: Swerb Entered on: April 1, 2004 11:21 AM
Jack - Another thing you might want to look into as far as DSL vs. cable is newsgroups, assuming you use them. One reason I pay more for Comcast cable internet is not only because it's faster than everything else, but because I also have free access to newsgroups, where other companies charge extra (I think).

From: Ross Entered on: April 1, 2004 12:30 PM
I don't think Jack uses newsgroups. But even so, Comcast only provides 1GB/month thru Giganews. That's probably fine for you as you probably are just getting music - but a single Xbox game is beyond your abilities with Comcast's basic newsgroups service.

From: Swerb Entered on: April 1, 2004 1:04 PM
Yeah, Bert, I guess I was aware of that, and never ran into the 1 gig/month problem before. What newsgroup service do you have?

From: Ross Entered on: April 1, 2004 1:09 PM
I actually use Giganews, but I pay an extra $11/month for upgraded service of 10GB/month.

Hey Jack, read this:

http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/41658

Looks like if you could score the 1.5-3Mbps package thru SBC, you'd be every bit as fast as the rest of us, if not faster.

From: The Bone Entered on: April 1, 2004 7:00 PM
That's cheaper than the $43 a month I pay for Earthlink cable.

From: Ross Entered on: April 1, 2004 7:36 PM
Jesus, I just ran the CNET bandwidth test

http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html

I scored 3109Kbps. I guess they weren't lying when they said they doubled my speed. Beat that, beyotches!

Incidentally, I hope Comcast never finds out, but I would pay ridiculous amounts of money for high speed. It's just that good. I pay what you pay, Bone, and do it happily.

4142.1 motherfucker!

From: Swerb Entered on: April 1, 2004 10:56 PM
Dude, Bert, you need to find something more constructive to do with your time. And I don't do my job so everyone will love me. Or maybe that's obvious...

And Aquinas is having a benefit concert for the campus newspaper Friday night. I championed the importance of the paper in a letter to the editor recently when the paper lost funding and almost stopped publishing... and I told them I would come to the show and introduce the headlining bands, but I didn't realize my name was being advertised. I think they just torpedoed the event, since I'm a 40-year-old guy who just doesn't get the music of young whippersnappers these days... plus, all I know how to do is suuuuuuuuuuucckkkkkkk coooooooooooccccccccckkkkkkk.

And finally, my bandwidth speed is 2600 or so, and I'm paying $60 a month! I feel like I'm getting ripped off!

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 1, 2004 11:45 PM
I got you all beat! I'm currently paying $50 a month and topping out at 500 Kbps! And that's with the wind at my back!

Yepper. We're giving SBC DSL a try at the new place.

From: Ross Entered on: April 2, 2004 7:38 AM
Damn, Bone, you beat my ass. Fucking Hawaii....

Still Swerb, 2600 is nothing to sneeze at. That's still greased lightning as far as I'm concerned.

Jack - yeah, 500 sucks. I don't blame you. :)

From: Ross Entered on: April 6, 2004 10:48 AM
Be careful, Jack. DSL prices are on the rise!

Shit! It's still cheaper than Lowell Cable! :)

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 20, 2004 2:24 PM
Well, our adventures for sweeter bandwidth has come full circle. As y'all know, when we called SBC to switch over our phone they alerted us that DSL was now available. They really sold us on it and they were scheduled to set it up for us this week. We hadn't heard anything so we gave them a call yesterday to see if there was a specific day and time we had to be home. The conversation went something like this:

SBC: The order has been cancelled.

Us: What? Why?

SBC: DSL isn't available in Lowell

Us: Why were we told it was? It was even on your web-site. We've been waiting... Was anyone going to call us back?

SBC: You should have been called.

So, I stopped by Lowell Cable and picked up my cable modem. Un-FREAKIN'believable! Wouldn't you think a PHONE COMPANY could use the PHONE?!? What's funny is we were surprised that DSL was available in Lowell because we had never heard anything about it. Even the SBC guy that hooked up our phone told me how sweet it was going to be. Morons.

Hey Ross - I picked up the ethernet-jack-end-things to hook up to my cat-5 cables. I also picked up a 8-port switch/hub (is there a difference?) to hook everything up to. Don't forget your toolbox when you come to G.R.! Speaking of which, SlimFatty finally committed to Saturday night for gaming (rather than Friday). So Sat night it is! I work til 5pm, so anyone that wants to stop at Rookies first -- come on in! -- and we'll all go to Ball's for some Wacky Eyes (tm) sam'itches first!

From: Ross Entered on: April 20, 2004 3:04 PM
I'll be sure to bring the crimper.

A switch is basically an "intelligent" hub. It routes traffic more efficiently so in theory your network bandwidth is higher if traffic goes thru switches rather than hubs.

Saturday night it is. I'm coming into town Friday, still, though. What are you guys up to on Friday? Still haven't seen KB2? I'll see it again.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 20, 2004 3:19 PM
I think we're seeing KB2 tonight actually. Fatty has a craving for wings from BW3 so he's eating dinner there first. Did I mention he's never been there? How does one get a craving for something they've never had?

By the way, this week at CompUSA you can get 160 gig WD HHDs for only $60 after rebates! Unreal! Fatty and I have already purchased our limit! Nothing bonds two buddies more than going out and buying HDDs together. It's something special Fatty and I do together all the time.

From: Ross Entered on: April 20, 2004 3:30 PM
Now dammit, I took the day off on Friday so that I could come to town and hang out. What the hell is going on Friday?

From: Swerb Entered on: April 21, 2004 1:31 AM
I'm sure some beers could stand to be consumed Friday evening... or a repeat trip to see Kill Bill V.2, since it's so fucking sweet.

From: Ross Entered on: April 21, 2004 1:53 PM
I agree, I would love to see it again. Roche is also in for another viewing Friday night if it comes to that. I guess it depends on whether Fatty is around and what he wants to do, since he's the man of the hour.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 21, 2004 7:40 PM
Hey Ross! I got some weird networking crap happening. I may need your assistance on Saturday to help unfornicate my processes. In a nutshell: I have my cable modem hooked up to my computer via USB. Internet works fine. However, If I plug an ethernet cable from my computer to my router (which I use in networking to my xboxes), I lose my internet connection. I don't get it. Maybe my cable should be going into my router first. I thought that's how I had it before the move, but now I don't know.

I'm sure you never get sick of friends asking you about computer networking shit, eh?

Anyways. See ya Saturday!

From: Ross Entered on: April 21, 2004 9:22 PM
Jack: avoid the USB at all costs. Plug the cable from the modem into the router directly, and plug your computer's ethernet into one of the router ports. Same for the xboxes. It should run like a champ. If not, I'll check it out Saturday.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: April 22, 2004 4:21 PM
Fatty messed around with my setup last night and he couldn't figure that shit out either. The connection is only made via USB (it won't work connecting the computer and modem via ethernet). And, if I plug in the ethernet from the computer into the router (while simultaneously USB'ed to the modem), I lose my internet connection.

Strange happenings indeed. Fatty finally threw his hands up and said he thought the ethernet connection on the cable modem was bad. I may trade it in for another tomorrow and try again.

We can hook up 4-5 xboxes in the gaming basement Saturday! Bring your box if you want, Ross! We got Fight Night 2004 which is a pretty sweet boxing game plus Toca Race Driver 2 which is system-linkable!

NETWORKING UPDATE:

Well, Ross, after you left last week I tried crimping a wire. I followed the colors in the switch manual. When inserted into the switch the light came on (and didn't just blink) but I couldn't make a connection with an xbox. So I figured, FUCK DAT! I'm done messin' with it!

After a couple calls around, I finally talked to the "boss" electrician about my cat-5 connections. He told me that they don't put ends on the cables because nobody ever uses them (!!!). Of over 200 homes they've wired, I'm the FIRST to ask about using the cat-5 connections. He said they were installed for future use -- I quicky replied "the future is here!" They'll be scheduling an appointment to stop in and fix me up soon. SWEET!

I appreciate the effort, though, and will hold your crimper til the next gaming fest.

From: Ross Entered on: May 3, 2004 4:27 PM
Wow, that is shocking. They've installed them in 200 homes and no one has used them??? Either that or 200 people are smarter than us and never had to call the electricians back. :)

From: Jackzilla Entered on: May 16, 2004 3:16 PM
I just have to share: My house network is SWEET! I've already played Halo on my Super-Sized TV vs. minions in the basement several times. Right now I'm copying games xbox-to-xbox using the house networking -- and going through 3 routers(!)... the most convoluted route my data will ever flow through -- and my transfer rate is at 10,400+ KB/S through Avalaunch! Holy shit, Bertman!

Speaking of playing minions in Halo: My 13-year-old niece Olivia is a MONSTER on Halo now. It's ridiculous. She's always been able to out-sniper and pistol-whip me, now she's at least my equal with the shotgun. It's unnerving. Rob (aka Princess) was schooled this afternoon. He admitted to have logged in way more hours playing than her, yet she whipped on both of us. And all at the squealing delight of her dad, MONKEY (formerly Tomcat).

From: John Entered on: May 16, 2004 4:03 PM
Your network sounds sweet and I can't wait to see it in action. I've played with Olivia lately and I must concur that she is a MONSTER. It doesn't feel sweet to be schooled by a 13 year old girl.

From: Ross Entered on: May 16, 2004 6:58 PM
Very nice, Jack. Too bad those buttheads didn't know what they were doing the first time around. I don't feel so bad now for not getting it working. ;)

If I ever end up having a house built, ethernet is a definite must for me as well. Right now I've got the house wired "well enough" but my bedroom must be served wirelessly.

From: Creeko Entered on: May 17, 2004 2:58 AM
John, I hope your comment about playing with 13 year old girls dosn't get taken out of context.
