Falcon, Bitches!
Entered on: April 20, 2009 7:15 AM by RobotSpider

Well, late Friday night, I was mid-Gears and suddenly my XBOX got really loud and then went red-light.  Not the infamous (more than famous) RRoD, but the lesser-known TLSLaR (Two Left-Side Lights are Red).  According to the Interweb, that means it's over-heating.

Long story short, I take it to Best Buy the next day, explain it to them.  I expect them to tell me hey have to SEE the error (since I'm sure lots of people take perfectly good machines in just for fun). The guy says, "How long before it overheats?"  15-20. He picks up the phone and says, "Can I get someone to bring me an XBOX 360 Elite?"  Someone brings it, they swap hard drives, ring it up, and since it's less than a year old, it's still covered by manufacturer's warranty, so they transfer my BB service plan to the new box--still 18 months left on that!  Oh, and the current retail box has two games in it, so I got those too! (Kung-Fu Panda, and Lego Indiana Jones--yeah, I know, but Indiana Jones is good!)

I know people have had bad experiences with Best Buy (me included). But so far I've only had to send one box out for repair.  And this is number 5.. or 6.. I forget.  This new one has the Falcon core which is, according to some reports, sporting the new 65nm graphics architecture.  Should be cooler, though I've read about some new problems they're seeing.  Should be interesting.  Hopefully MS learns their lesson and they design the next console a little better.

As of last night, the new box hasn't helped my game at all...

Jack's all about the ASS-ault!

Really?  You found JA online already before I did?  I just hooked the bitch up and pulled it up for the first time, and Bunky beats me to the punch!

Bells and I completed the Riddick sequel.  Pretty sweet stuff.  Back to Gears!

Ha Ha. I forgot it was going to be down during your move. I just hopped on after being out of town working the last few days! Thanks for having it ready for me when I got home!!!

If you had a JA App for my iPhone, I would have noticed it was down!!!

I was all set to start developing for the iPhone--downloaded all the SDKs (GBs worth), started reading up on it a bit.   5 minutes into my first intro-video, I learned you have to have write your code on a Mac.  I don't know why that was a surprise, but it was.  I guess since I've been using the phone with my PC, I just assumed it could be developed on either platform.  D'oh.  Well, at least I got a few gigs of hard-drive back!

Although, I know there are things you can do with CSS and XSLT to make sites more iPhone friendly.  I have been here with my phone before, and it's perfectly usable.  As long as Ross doesn't implement any Flash-based content, we should be good :)

Yeah, in JA's case, I'd just do iPhone detection and re-render/re-style the site more appropriately for the iPhone.  It would actually be pretty fun, if I had the time.  I'd also like to look at re-designing the site to run on the Google App Engine, especially since they just released a Java version.  But again, time constraints prohibit such fun for now.

And NO FLASH!

Why don't you look into getting an intern? Get some geeky highschool kid, you could pay him in beer.

Actually I'll be getting a college intern at work here in a couple of months... think they'd notice if I put him on Jackassery detail for a while? :)

HA HA. What if he ends up being a she? Just think of the project suggestions Bone would have for you!

Hopefully they don't google you and come across the Havasu pics!

It's a dude, unfortunately.

Well, I should be back on Xbox Live sometime after this weekend.  I get a TV for the basement delivered tomorrow, so I'll be able to hook up my system down there.  Of course, I still have nowhere to sit down there.  Maybe I'll fire up one of those Bunky-style boom chairs...

From: Bunky Entered on: May 1, 2009 9:47 AM

The chair has been unplugged for some time now. Jack's cackle coming out of the surround sound AND chair speakers in the headrest area, mixed with the excessive vibrations during Gear's gaming, I had to pull the plug!

However, it is still comfortable to sit in!

From: Ross Entered on: May 1, 2009 10:57 AM

Yeah, do they sell them without speakers?  I used to sit in one like that in college, and it was perfect for gaming.  But it seems like the extra speakers are just an unnecessary expense...

From: Bunky Entered on: May 1, 2009 11:26 AM

I imagine they do. If Patrick had asked me before he bought it, I would have told him to forgo the speakers as well. It is a bit awkard trying to explain to non-gaming friends why you sit in a vibrating chair that has voices coming out of speakers...

Best Buy used to carry gamer chairs, I am not sure if they still do or not.

I can find one on their site (with speakers) and it's pretty cheap - $80.  But you can only order online.  I might stop in today and see if I can get one in the store.  Thanks!
