Arguably the only good thing to come out of Episode I...
Entered on: January 29, 2009 10:00 AM by RobotSpider

The big lightsaber battle at the end of Ep. I is clearly the best part of the movie.  The score playing in the background is the now-ubiquitous "Duel of the Fates", by John Williams.  It's used in trailers and YouTube videos ad-nausea.  I was listening to the soundtrack and was curious about the 'lyrics' being used.  It's not like Williams to have a huge choir sing "Laaaaa La Laaaaaa".  After some searching, I found some information and thought (hoped) some of you would be interested:

It's Sanskrit.  JW chose it because it was less recognizable than Greek or Latin, and fit the phonetic requirements he had for that piece.

The actual lyrics are:
Khara Matha Khara Rath Amah
Khara Rath Amah Yuddha Khara
Khara Syada Rath Amah Dai Ya
Khara Ki La Dan Ya
Niha Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Syada Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Khara Dan Ya Khara Rath Amah
Khara Dan Ya Khara Rath Amah
Niha Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Syada Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Khara
Khara Matha Khara Rath Amah
Khara Dan Ya Khara Rath Amah
Niha Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Syada Ki La Khara Rath Amah
Khara

Because there is no formalized grammar or sentence structure in Sanskrit, the translation is crude as dialog, but lyrically and poetically interesting.

Word meanings are (again, roughly):

Khara - dreadful
Matha - head
Rath - speak
Amah - give
Yuddha - battle
Syada - raging
Dai - purify
Ya - going
Ki - like
La - taking
Dan - separate

So the full translation is:

dreadful head dreadful speak give
dreadful speak give battle dreadful
dreadful raging speak give purify going
dreadful like taking separate going
loss like taking dreadful speak give
raging like taking dreadful speak give
dreadful separate going dreadful speak give
dreadful separate going dreadful speak give
loss like taking dreadful speak give
raging like taking dreadful speak give
dreadful
dreadful head dreadful speak give
dreadful separate going dreadful speak give
loss like taking dreadful speak give
raging like taking dreadful speak give
dreadful

I had to check the poster because for a second there it looked like one of Fatty's "late-night drunk" posts...

Yeah, but Fatty's post wouldn't have had the explanation to go along with it.

I think I saw a 60 Minutes special on this before the release of Ep I where they talked about this.  I thought it was cool as well.  Even though it's definitely overplayed, Duel of the Fates is definitely one of the best pieces of Star Wars music.

Ha ha, I did the same exact thing, no lie.

It's still jibberish but man that lightsaber duel was the best thing about all three movies. Darth Maul was sweet as hell. My favorite Sith. He doesn't say shit the whole movie except one line about revenge. Baddass.

I'd even go so far as to say that that lightsabe duel is one of the finest action scenes I've seen.  I friggin love it.
