This guy wrote a letter to George Lucas, and I have to say, I agree with pretty much everything he says:

Yeah, I wish Lucas would say, "You're right I fornicated the process. I'll make it up to you. I'm re-writing Episode 1 and 2, the Wachowskis bros are going to direct it for me, and you can dump the old ones in the shit can." Of course this won't happen and it's unlikely the 3rd installment will be any better. I'll still watch it though.

All this time, what's been drawing us is the promise of Darth Vader and some lightsaber fights (which Lucas now refers to almost exclusively as "laser swords", if that gives you an indication of how far awry things have gone). At this point, I hate to say it, but Attack of the Clones has settled in on me and as pretty as it is, I don't have much desire to watch it repeatedly like the originals. The guy in the letter gets it right: there is no chemistry with the cast, and the performances are so wooden! I mean, there were some true moments of cheese in the original trilogy, but rarely was anyone wooden - if anything, they were over-animated (think "power converters"). Not many memorable lines, nothing that makes you feel at home while watching it. Granted, some of this is due to the subject matter just not being all that interesting, but it certainly could have been MADE more interesting. Hell, Roche and I read a fan's account of a script for Episode III that he claimed he found - which was 100% bullshit - but the kicker was, even if Lucas filmed what was in that fan's script, it would be twice as good as what he will probably come up with on his own.

Still, like the Bone said, I'll be there anyway, just for any mention of Vader.

Thing is, the cheese in the first trilogy is part of what defines "Star Wars." Lucas has a tin ear for dialogue; while I understand he doesn't want to date the material and he's trying to give it that old-timey serial quality, he doesn't know how to do that very well, either. Funny thing is, I haven't even fired up the Ep II DVD other than to watch a few choice scenes and to see how sweet my new speakers sounded after I bought them. Here's hoping that our hopes don't get up for Ep III, and he blows us away with it... although hoping for a lack of hope may result in the implosion of the universe...

That's the letter I would have written! I mean can you imagine Episodes 1-3 as directed by Peter (Lord of the RIngs) Jackson? The way Lucas has turned a SWEET character like Vader into a pansy Backstreet Boy snot is inexcusable. He didn't direct all the original movies, why does he feel he has to direct all the new ones?

By the way, Johnny informed me this weekend that EBERT & REGIS gave Ang Lee's HULK an enthusiastic TWO THUMBS UP! YAY! Can't wait!

I have to agree with the letter as well. The original Star Wars movies were far better than the new ones. Better direction would be welcomed at this point. Alas, it's to much to hope for. Maybe the universe will just have to implode.
