Problems
Entered on: May 8, 2003 8:24 PM by Ross
I've been having some trouble keeping the site online the past day or so, I'm not sure what the trouble is but basically the web server goes into a loop and then dies after a minute or so. I'm working to fix it but I'm leaving town tonight and my ability to do so will be diminished for the next couple weeks. Still, I'll have an internet connection so I should be able to pull something out of my ass if need be.

Sorry, boys...

Okay, we had some more downtime today and this time it looks like it wasn't my fault... apparently my power went out. I had Heather come by and restart my computers and get me enough to go on to get everything back up and running. In the future, I'm going to do two things to insure that this kind of thing doesn't happen as often:

1) Buy a Universal Power Supply so that even in a power failure, the web server and other network gear keep running.

2) Get a static IP address. This means that jackassery.com always will point at the same location on the internet and in the event that my service does go out, the site will become available the instant the service comes back. Currently, my ISP will usually give me a new address if the outage is long enough. I found out today that for an extra $9/mo I can get a static address, which is sooo worth the money in my case.

In case anyone cares, the site was down again for a few hours, this time my fault partly. In trying to do #1 above, I had to unplug the network devices and server, so that they could put put on the battery backup. When I booted everything back up, I couldn't get online. I spent about 2 hours on hold with tech support and we finally got the shit straight, I think.

The only thing is, #2 is questionable. I have a new address. If you're here, it doesn't really matter, but why am I paying more money per month to not keep the same address?

I don't understand any of what's going on. My cats breath smells like cat food.
