Cloverfield: who's interested?
Entered on: January 18, 2008 11:33 AM by Radmobile
I'm pretty excited to see it.  I think it's getting pretty mixed reviews though.  Anyone else wanting to go see it?  Swerb?  Have you been already?

Only 77% on Rotten Tomatoes but I Am Legend is 68% and I liked that ok.  It looks like a lot of Bourne-like shaky camera crap, but could be fun.

We're off to see a movie Saturday night with the Bems.  Maybe we'll see this.  Should I make a call if we are, Rad?

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 18, 2008 11:45 AM
Nah. Annie's expressed interest in this one too so I'm going to wait for a less busy time for her to go see it with me. Let us know how it is though.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 18, 2008 11:53 AM
This will most likely be one that I have to rent, considering the logistics of actually successfully going to a movie in the theatre.  It does look pretty good.  The shaky camera is supposed to be from some guy filming it on his camcorder, i.e. The Blair Witch Project.

From: Ross Entered on: January 18, 2008 1:05 PM

I was pretty interested since it was JJ Abrams (Lost creator) who was the main creative force. The reviews are tempering my enthusiasm to some extent.  I dunno... I don't get out to many movies much anymore anyway (obviously less with the tyke around) so I'm sure I'll wait for video.

Swerb seemed to like it, though, so I am optimistic.

It's no masterpiece, but it's fun to watch on the big screen, just for that feeling of being submerged in the carnage.

From: John Entered on: January 20, 2008 4:28 PM

I agree with Swerb on this one, it was no masterpiece but it was fun. Zilla did'nt love it, he hates shaky camera work and it gave him a headache, it did'nt bother me though.

BTW, I'm back online!

WHAT???  Who the hell said you were allowed on this site?  Didn't we kick you off years ago?

Bells is back!?  No way!

Regarding the movie:  Yeah, I was hoping it would be better.  I liked I Am Legend a bit more.

(+) The effects are well done.  A lot of it obviously inspired by 9/11 footage and looks pretty realistic (buildings crashing down, debris and smoke, etc).

(-) The the shaky-camera work is a bit much for a whole movie and the movie is all about this gimmick.  Besides giving me a headache after a while, I wanted the camera to stay on the action of the monster but of course you're following the people -- So you feel like you're missing stuff.  Also, the characters are a bit shallow and under-developed:  Just a bunch of pretty people that I never was given enough reason to care for.

So, an interesting experiment for a movie but a bit lacking in substance.

Juno?  As Swerb told us:  Excellent!  We loved it!

From: John Entered on: January 21, 2008 3:29 PM

Juno was excellent as avertised.

I do agree with you about the characters lacking depth however not seeing the monster action added to the impending doom. I found it made it tense for me which I enjoyed.

Since your back Bells, perhaps Bunky can define the new saying that's making the rounds on Live: "going Bells on Bone."

Don't look at me!  Bunky's been saying it!

From: Bunky Entered on: January 21, 2008 7:44 PM

The phrase, I believe is "like Bells on Bone." It means with great admiration or respect.

When Slim Jim wanted to snap into some Ramshackleton and sent him a friend request and party invite, he was "like Bells on Bone." He had great admiration for Ramshakleton's  Halo skills.

Do not confuse "like Bells on Bone" with "like Jack on Prince."

Asshole.

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 22, 2008 8:21 AM

Does Bells being on-line again mean he'll soon be on Live?  If so I may have to start making appearances more often.

As for Cloverfireld, Annie and I saw it last night.  We enjoyed it.  We went to the Star on Alpine.  We were one of 3 couples there.  It was 6:00 on a monday though.  We both liked how it ended.  The camera didn't bother me much when they were running arround, but there were times when it was excessively shaky just for the sake of annoying you.  Like when a guy was walking arround his apartment at the beginning I felt like I was on a boat it was swaying so much.

P.S.  I'm still really looking forward to Iron Man.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 9:33 AM

Rad.  Haven't you learned you're lessons from Fantastic Four?  Iron Man will be excessively gay. Just like Fantastic Four.  Keep in mind, I'm stating this without actually viewing either of the Fantastic Four movies.

I forgot that bells was alive even.  I mean, I see Melissa around more than Bells.

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 22, 2008 9:56 AM

We knew what we were getting into from the previews for Fantastic Four.  Burn victim Thing and all.  So far I've seen nothing to even make me wary of Iron Man.

I did see a preview of a Jessica Alba movie I'll probably never watch (speaking of Fantastic Four).  I used to have an Bells-like obsession with her, but lately the shitty movies have caused it to dwindle quite a bit.

From: Ross Entered on: January 22, 2008 9:57 AM

Now waitaminute... how does it follow that because FF was gay (and it most certainly was) that Iron Man will be as well?  Seems to me that Jon Favreau is worthy of enough respect to be cautiously optimistic about the movie.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 10:25 AM

I guess I will allow CAUTIOUS optimism.  Comic books generally don't translate well into movies and I always thought Iron Man was a bit of shallow character.  I just don't see a lot of potential for the storyline.  Burt then again, I've never been a big reader of Iron Man.

From: Ross Entered on: January 22, 2008 10:56 AM

I think it's one thing to say that comic books haven't been well translated into movies and another to say that they don't translate well.  I think comics can be and have adapted rather well - just inconsistently - Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, and X-Men 2 are great examples of well done adaptations.  Also, I think Sin City was pretty well done but that was a literal translation of several stories, rather than the typical tactic of doing an original adaptation, which I think is what you are talking about.

Anyway, there's nothing about the Iron Man character that would make it inherently movie-unfriendly, IMO.  He's basically a happier version of Batman in an iron lung.  There's potential for some cool whiz-bang effects with him battling it out with Iron Monger.  So like I said, I think cautious optimism is warranted.

Of course, Bells may poo-pooh immediately because it has the presence of Gweneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.  She's his anti-Alba.

F the Da Vinci Code.... I just cracked the secret of Rad!  This is what Bunky hears when he speaks and why girls get all hernie for him.

From: BigFatty Entered on: January 22, 2008 11:27 AM

Wait, that last part could be:

P.S.  I'm still really looking forward to Iron Man.

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 22, 2008 11:52 AM

Nice Will,  I didn't think anyone would ever catch on to me.  I just hope having cracked the code doesn't make you susceptible to its effects.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 11:53 AM

Fatty. You're intelligence astounds me.  I had no idea this was what Josh was saying.  But now I understand.  It's all clear to me now.

Oh.  I'm not allowed to say hernie in my house.  If I tell Megan I'm hernie she screws up her face and tells me not to say that.  Says it makes her think of Jack.  How about that Zilla, Megan gets a sour taste in her mouth when she thinks of you being hernie.

From: Ross Entered on: January 22, 2008 12:04 PM

NickNick, will your marital humiliations never end? Now you can't even tell your wife that you're hernie!

From: BigFatty Entered on: January 22, 2008 12:32 PM

When she forces you to sit down to pee, let us know... we will have to do an intervention....  No, we just want to know so we can laugh.  I hope my brother has passed the 'I sit down when I pee' stage in his life.  He unsuccessfully tried to lobby for it with no takers.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 12:40 PM

I just found it funny that the particular enunciation of hernie brought on sich a negative reaction.

There's not really any humilations, just willfull subjugation to her authority.

From: Ross Entered on: January 22, 2008 1:15 PM

So you are no longer even humiliated when told how to behave by your wife.  Now you have passed on your humliation to others, as I feel humiliated on your behalf.

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 22, 2008 1:36 PM

I'm with Ross on this I'm afraid.  I sometimes feel humiliated for you.  Well you tell us stories of your "marital humiliations"  (I love that term by the way)  I can almost hear the Debbie Downer music playing at the end.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 1:55 PM

Well, shit.  If my recently de-virginized cousin is humiliated for me then I'm surely the lowest of low.

By the way.....

FUCK THE JACKASSERIANS!!

Oh well.  I'll go crawl back to my wife and see if she can put my dinner in my dog dish.

From: Radmobile Entered on: January 22, 2008 2:02 PM

I prefer the term "de-flowered" but you are right to be ashamed.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 2:17 PM

Ass.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: January 22, 2008 3:29 PM

HA HA!

From: Bunky Entered on: January 22, 2008 3:47 PM

A BIG thanks to Fatty! I wondered what made Rad Bunky kryptonite... I now know why I am I become so submissive to Rad's advances as soon as he is in the game.

I was wondering why Rad saying "Oh, Bunky, I'm going to go Betty Whitebread on you" had such an effect on me... I will be much wiser now... What a bastard!

Fortunately, he has been busy "laying pipe" so he hasn't had much time for us....

Nick Nick, I feel so bad for you that my husband gets "a bonus time" each week in your honor....

From: NickNick Entered on: January 22, 2008 3:52 PM

fuck off.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: January 22, 2008 3:54 PM

HA HA!

From: Bunky Entered on: January 22, 2008 3:58 PM

See our intervention is working! You are starting to get your balls back!

From: John Entered on: January 22, 2008 6:26 PM

Like Bells on Bone, hmm...... not sure I care for that phrase.

Some day even Bert will capitulate and be subjugated by the H-Bomb, it's natures way. So don't feel too bad NickNick.

From: Bunky Entered on: January 22, 2008 7:24 PM

I am so excited to see you on JA! Now, if we can just get you on XBOX Live....

From: John Entered on: January 22, 2008 7:37 PM

If only........ you never know, it could happen. I don't know that the hernie which would ensue could be sustained on a nightly basis.

From: Bunky Entered on: January 22, 2008 7:41 PM

A weekly showing would be nice.... I am still waiting for you to accept my friends request. I guess you are just playing hard to get....

From: John Entered on: January 23, 2008 8:25 AM

That's what adds to my sex appeal....... yeah baby.

From: NickNick Entered on: January 23, 2008 8:44 AM

Between Johnny and Rad, the rest of us don't stand a chance.

From: Swerb Entered on: January 24, 2008 11:18 AM

Back to movies: Everyone needs to see "There Will Be Blood." No excuses...

From: NickNick Entered on: January 24, 2008 11:23 AM

There are just too many movies I want to see.  "There Will Be Blood" is one.  Also on the list:

No Country For Dead Men
Spiderwick Chronicles
Cloverfield
and many, many more.

From: BigFatty Entered on: January 24, 2008 12:34 PM

It just finished TIVOing for me and I can't wait to see it.  I also just finished No country for old men which was pretty good - plus it has a great, bad-guy hairdo.  Juno was also watched and enjoyed too.

From: Ross Entered on: January 24, 2008 1:16 PM

Never underestimate the power of a bad guy's hairdo, I always say.  Err, rather, Bells does.

From: Swerb Entered on: January 24, 2008 10:53 PM

Like I said, no excuses. After listening to this, even totally decontextualized, there's no way you'll not want to see "There Will Be Blood."

Plus, Bert, there's a believers vs. nonbelievers plot to it that will put you on the fucking floor.

From: Ross Entered on: January 25, 2008 2:06 PM

Sweet!  But I don't know how I'm going to get to while it's still in the theaters.  Unless some... other...means becomes available, I'll probably still have to wait for video.

From: BigFatty Entered on: January 25, 2008 3:52 PM

You might want to wait on those other means.....  my other means did not pan out so sweet.  The quality was bad and there had to be chunks of the movie cut out.  I could not even finish it.  Hopefully another other will surface soon so I can give it another shot.

From: Bunky Entered on: January 25, 2008 6:39 PM

I will have to check stock with my other means...

From: Jackzilla Entered on: January 25, 2008 7:07 PM

Bunky - Are your other means initials E D G E ?    Wink

From: Bunky Entered on: January 25, 2008 7:46 PM

I don't know what you mean. Since I can't afford a lawyer because I just did my f'ing taxes, I am going to have to use my constitutional rights and plead the fifth... Kiss

From: Radmobile Entered on: February 12, 2008 9:07 AM

I think I watched the same version as Will, but I made sense of it nonetheless.  It was an excellent film.  The church scenes were insane.  I wasn't sure to whether to laugh or be scared.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: February 12, 2008 11:46 AM

We also watched the questionable version of Blood and I seemed to be the only person that liked it in our group.  Bells, Melissa and Ang hated it.  We all hated the soundtrack as well (done by the Radiohead guy), it was a bit discordant, distracting and obnoxious.  Bad quality of this version may be partial to blame.

Swerb - Be ready to defend this movie against Bells this weekend!

From: Radmobile Entered on: February 12, 2008 11:52 AM

Annie & I both liked it, but agreed that the music was unnecessarily creepy much of the time.
