This simple little Risk type game has sapped countless hours of my work time. I can't tell if it's because I'm just bored or that this game is just that addictive.

Interesting, quick reading from Yahoo:

Top Medical Myths that even some doctors believe:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20071221/sc_livescience/7medicalmythsevendoctorsbelieve

Then even MORE interesting:

Top Science Myths:

Except this is more like a list and not so much an article.

That's good stuff, Fatty!  I'm glad to see those - I have battled many people on many of those topics, even my own father!  I can recall arguing:

  • objects visible from space: as the article says, it all depends "where" in space, duh!
  • humans use only 10% of their brains - what a stupid meme
  • penny dropped from empire state building - luckily, the mythbusters busted that one
  • water drains in one direction based on your hemisphere - my dad still teaches this one in his physics class, despite it being thoroughly debunked.
  • reading in dim light ruins eyesight - I always take people to task on that one
  • shaved hair grows back faster/thicker - bullshit!
  • drink 8 glasses of water a day - this is my current favorite that I love to debunk.  This is so pervasive that almost everyone believes it.
Nice work, Fats!

The water one always bothered me too.  I believed it, cuz all the experts said this, but it really did not make any sense.  If it was that important, you should see acute differences in your health.  8 Glasses is a lot!  All I really noticed is that I peed a whole lot more.  That was the crazy part.  If you needed so much water, why are you peeing most of it out?  Granted, it is removing wastes, but c'mon - if you drink less water, your pee is just more concentrated with wastes.  Plus, your body is working more moving all that water through.  A lot of this stuff we all know (especially if you think about it) but we got so used to hearing these myths as facts, we just accepted it.  Turned off our thinkers.  Kinda like religion.

Most people I know only drink 2-3 glasses of something a day.  Europe is not big on beverages - especially large ones.  Everyone here seems to be doing OK!

I always wondered about this one. I mean, do they count all the moisture you get in your foods and in the other liquids you drink? I mean, milk is just fat suspended in water, right?

The people who perpetuated the myth didn't count water from food or other drinks, but the original claim of 64oz of water did factor all that into account, which is how the myth got created in the first place.

For me, even when I didn't know the myth was a myth, I eventually realized it was bullshit just by virtue of how often I was pissing.  Back when I was on the Body For Life (back when Roche and I called it "The Bill Phillips"), I was drinking a gallon of water a day and pissing continuously.  I started scaling it back, but eventually realized that I needed very little in the way of beverages or else I was running to the bathroom too frequently.  Now, I pretty much have a glass of water with every meal and I have my coffee in the morning and that's it - but even so, I have to piss after just 16-20oz of water with a meal!  That tells me that I'm plenty hydrated and 64 oz/day is pure nonsense.

Another 'clue' for me was watching cats and dogs.  You would think we operate in similar ways.  You would expect them to drink what they need out of natural instinct.  What I've observed over time is they really don't drink that much.  Plus, the mechinism given to them for water drinking is not really designed to handle a bunch of water at once.  We were not given any specialized methods to drink a lot of water either....... unless God made the 1 liter water bottle from Adam's other rib.
