Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Entered on: December 3, 2007 12:36 PM by Ross

So who has seen this?  I don't know how it escaped my notice until now, and I had actually been hearing good things about this.  So I finally got a chance to watch it this weekend, and I'm here to tell you that it is far better than the already-good Superman II.

I know, for instance, that Johnnybells dings the original movie for some of its campy qualities.  Well, that shit is gone!  This is a far more serious film, and it makes far more sense as well.

Now we finally get to understand how Clark gets his powers back after losing them.  The re-inclusion of the all-important father/son scenes makes the movie a million times better, in my opinion.

If you're a fan of comic book movies at all, I recommend seeing this if you haven't already.

Speaking of which, I also watched Spider-Man 2.1 (in glorious 720p on my new TV, and yes over HDMI).  I didn't know much about the extra footage in this one, but it too improves the movie noticeably.  Zilla's complaints about Harry being obsessed with "the bug" are actually addressed and Harry seems less annoying now, since he explains that at Peter's birthday party that his desire to see Spider-Man dead is like how Peter wants Uncle Ben's killer dead - it seems more well thought out in this cut to me.  Also, there is additional action footage, and I noticed it immediately (since I have the entire train fight sequence committed to memory, this should surprise no one) and it's every bit as sweet as the original parts.

I give them both the thumbs!

I've watched this.  I agree that it's much better than the campy old version.  Everything made a lot more sense in it.  I forget, did they remove the giant celephane S-shield from this one?  That was my least favorite part of the old one.

Yep, that's gone too!  All the bullshit is stricken, and replaced by sweetness!

I might just have to take a look at it then. When I was a kid, I thought that 2 was super sweet, and upon re-watching it, I couldn't even figure out how a kid would like it.

Personally, I've always liked Superman 2.  I think what amazes me about it to this day is that back then that was the only movie ever made on a big-budget scale that ever really tried to do a big superhero brawl right.  It just seems epic in scale considering its age.  Nowadays it's nothing unusual but if you consider that it's 30 years old, it's pretty awesome.

True. The same could be said about movies like Clash of the Titans and Blade Runner. To look at those movies today, they're ho-hum. But back then, looking at what was attempted and what had been done prior is pretty huge.

Interesting. It was the camp factor that made me believe Superman and Superman II don't hold up to the test of time (that opinion expressed much to Bert's chagrin...). I need to check out the Donner cut.

NickNick: I contend that Blade Runner works better now than it did back then, because as adults, we can better appreciate its complexity. I just saw the re-re-(re-?)release of it, and granted there are some narrative alterations (for the better), but the movie never had the impact on me like it does now. It's a GREAT movie. And a lot of it has to do with context, too, which is an old argument of mine.... I saw it on a big screen in a state-of-the-art digital theater, and it was awesome. Maybe not so much at home on your TV... which might be my problem with the old Superman movies.

As for Clash of the Titans... pure corn, no matter what.

Oh come on. The little bronze owl was a great plot device.

I'll give you the bronze owl. And "Release the kraken!!!" which is one of the greatest lines ever.

I too watched the Final Cut of Blade Runner last night and loved it. I don't quite remember what's different about this version, but I enjoy this movie more and more as I get older.
