Not really.  They have the "Boom Shot" or somesuch - it's a rocket, but you pretty much have to land a direct hit to kill them - the splash damage isn't very powerful, like it is in Halo.

For Gears the "newbie" weapon people hate to die at the hand of is the chainsaw.  I usually respond with if it's so newbie, why didn't you avoid it?  ZOOOW!
