Bioshock
Entered on: August 16, 2007 7:20 PM by Ross

Has anyone else played the demo for this yet?  If not, get it now!  I am so completely blown away by this - I cannot wait for more!  Best of all, it's out Tuesday - I can only assume I'll be able to obtain a copy immediately and that it won't be sold out everywhere, though it should be - it looks better than almost any single player first person shooter I've ever played, and I'm pretty sure I've played just about every really good one.

So come Tuesday, no more Gears for me for a while!  Not until I soak up all the Bioshock-y goodness...

I played the demo as well.  I loved it.  I'm not sure the gemeplay was super impressive (though it was entertaining enough), but the environments were a real treat.  Eveything takes place in an underwater city, done in an 1950's art deco style.  The enemies were creepy, complete with scary little girls (I know that's one of Jacks favorite things).  It looks like much of the fun of the game will come from the story; finding out why this underwater city was built, what happened to make the population go coo-coo for coco puffs.  Considering it's the only game in the the ballpark of sweetness that's come out in the past several months I think it should sell fairly well.  Let us know how the rest of the game is.  I want to get it but I've been saving my money for a few other games that keep getting delayed.

I was over at Zilla's house and got a little taste of the Bioshock. No, the game. It was full on sweet. I like the idea of the plasmids and the weapons. kind of brings me back to the "Hand of God" in Rise of the Triad. I need to win the lottery, so I can have money to buy an x-box 360 and all those sweet games and so I can quit my job so that I have time to play them.

There are quite a few games to get excited about coming out in the next few months: Bioshock, Half Life 2 Orange Box, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed... but like Rad, I was blown away by the environments in Bioshock more than anything else.  I felt totally immersed in the game.  I'm counting down the time till Best Buy opens on Tuesday...

Did you all notice that once you killed one of the people, you could hit them again and get their eye to pop out or bloody up their shirt more.  That was cool.  What, no one has to worry about my violent tendancies.

Bert - Did you ever play Condemned?  Bioshock reminded me of that a little bit (because of the crazies you get to hit).  I'd recommend it, it was the only 360 release title that impressed me at the time.  Will I get Bioshock?  We'll see... maybe Rad & I can go halvsies.  I'm actually pretty pumped for Halo 3 now that I hear it has 4-player co-op (over Live or system link!).  Yummy co-op goodness!  I might even get Rad or Ram to play with me on Live for a change...

IGN's Bioshock review is in: 9.7 INCREDIBLE!

I'm telling you - I'm more excited for Bioshock than anything save for possibly the next episode of Half Life 2 (I predict that Team Fortress online may give Gears a run for its online money).  I'm definitely looking forward to Halo 3 as well, and I'm sure online co-op will be fun - but for some reason, not as pumped.  It kind of feels like old hat.

The reviews on Metacritic are nearly off the charts!

Oh, and I had only very peripherally heard of Condemned but I've added it to the top of my gamefly queue.  Thanks for the tip!

So have you all got your copies of Bioshock yet?  Can I count on everyone to be all bleary and red eyed tomorrow with Bioshock hangover?

I just got my copy!  Thanks again for the $10 off tip, Jack.  Will report back later - got gaming to do!

OMFG it's off the hook sweet!  I had to take a small break to savor the sweetness.

Okay, back to it.

Okay, I just finished it.  In short, I think it's one of the best single-player first person shooters I've ever played - up there with Half Life and Half Life 2.  I loved every minute of it.  Now it's just a question of how long until I go back and play through again.  I made sure to take my time and try to explore everything, but I only got about half the achievements in the game, plus there's an alternate ending I could unlock if I played differently.  But Heather is getting rather annoyed with the constant playing.  And no, I haven't been neglecting the boy, he's been sitting with me and getting his videogame education the whole while!

I got Bioshock but haven't played it yet.

I'm waiting for the new and improved ZAGNUT to be done.  It's being dismantled, and reconfigured, to be a leaner, meaner gaming center.  There will be less TV screens (4 have been sold off), and an HDTV addition.  Basically, I've found that over this summer there's been much less mega party nights with tons of people and more of just me (or only 2-4 people) playing.  I wanted a better screen since the bulk of my gaming is downstairs now and I was bored of the old setup.

So, when the new HDTV is in I'll be playing some Bioshock!

Stay tuned for pictures of the new ZAGNUT!

Sweet, can't wait to check it out.  Actually Heather and are planning for a GR trip sometime in September to bring the little guy around.  Will let everyone know when we figure out the date.

By the way, anyone who is interested in getting another game every bit as good as Bioshock should check out Half-Life: Orange Box, which comes out October 11. It includes the original Half-Life 2 - which is easily up there with Bioshock as one of the best shooters ever, as well as Half Life 2 episodes 1 and 2.  I've played episode 1, which is basically a 4-5 hour sequel to HL 2, and episode 2 is brand new to this release, and I can't wait to play it.

But perhaps even more exciting to those who prefer multiplayer is the addition of Team Fortress 2, which is a game that has been in development for something like 10 years - the original Team Fortress was a free online mod for the original Half Life and will go down in history as one of the best online games of all time.  Sometime after it was released, it was announced by Valve (makers of Half-Life) that they would release Team Fortress 2 as a separate game, and the original  screenshots (back in 2000) had me drooling - but now after many years off the radar, it's a totally revamped game with cartoony-but-sweet graphis, and in my mind could be a Gears killer for online play.  I highly recommend checking it out - all of the aforementioned games are in the Orange Box release.

Welcome to Rapture!

Introducing the new and improved ZAGNUT!

I sold off 5 TVs and gained a new one (52" 1080p Mitsubishi HDTV). The HDTV is of course the main gaming station and features a leather couch and 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound Speakers.

Turning left you'll find the old trusty 36" tube with leather chair.  Also a bunk bed for Bells when he plays poorly and feels the need to rest.

Turn even further left (to the hallway leading to the stairs) we have two nice-sized TVs with LA-Z-BOY chairs.

All four game stations are of course connected together for Xbox Live or System Link play.  The larger two TVs have Xbox 360's, and ALL four have sweet original Xboxes connected and ready to roll.

Bring on Halo 3 with 4-player co-op!  Bring on System Linked Gears of War!  Oh heck... just BRING IT!

Oh and let's not forget:  the 65-inch upstairs has an original Xbox, Xbox 360 and a Wii also!

Very impressive - can't wait to see it in person.

Speaking of Halo 3, there's a cool article in this month's Wired about Halo 3.  I have to say that it got me pretty jazzed up to play it. But will it steal the Jack/Bunky team's attention away from Gears?  That's the question!

From: Creeko Entered on: August 29, 2007 2:47 PM

I've been kickin it old school on the Wii - first with the N64 Zelda Ocnaria of Time, which despite primitive graphics is a great game and then I picked up a used copy of Metriod Prime which is perhaps one of the best games I have ever played including current Gen. titles.

Ever since the first Zelda and Metroid titles came out on the NES I've been a fan so I thought it was cool to be able to play these games on the Wii. A new Metroid has just come out for the Wii with some really strong reviews and not just for a Wii game, they're saying it can hang with the big boys on XB360 and PS3. If I get a chance, I can't wait to check it out.

Bert - I read that Halo 3 article too.  I gotta admit the Halo 3 beta left me less than impressed (anyone wanna buy a used copy of Crackdown?), but the recent articles I've read have got me excited again.  I can't wait!

From: Ross Entered on: August 29, 2007 1:37 PM
I can't decide whether I'm more excited about Halo 3 multiplayer or Team Fortress 2.  Just check out  this trailer for the latter!

Ross- You will be pleased to know I actually slummed it with Halo 2 yesterday. Although I will be mourning the loss of my chainsaw, I have decided to slowly start the transition from Gears to Halo.... I am excited about the 4 player co-op. I agree with Zilla regarding the beta... Anyone want a FREE copy of Crackdown? I am hoping we can pull Radmobile away from DIRT long enough to play a round or two of Halo 3 with us.... If he starts accepting our game invites, we may even ask him to play "just one more...."

You know, I'm thinking of replaying thru Halo and Halo 2 to whet my appetite. After Bioshock, though, I don't know if anything can satisfy...

Actually I know what will be occupying me (gaming-wise) for the next couple days at least: I got in to the Call of Duty 4 beta!  This one isn't WWII - it's modern shit and looks pretty freaking sweet!

Forget BioShock...

Space Giraffe is here!  The latest creation of Jeff Minter (creator of the sublime Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar) is now available on Xbox Live Arcade for 5 bucks and is superfunkycalifragisexy!  Think of it as a mix between Tempest and Geometry Wars.  It's games like this that makes me want to get a Live Arcade developer's kit and start programming again!

Oh and ignore the bad reviews, they are apparently written by kids with their heads stuck in the ass of WoW.  IGN gave it a 4.7 and OXM a 2/10, of which Minter referred to the review as "just about the most extraordinary example of egregious fuckwittery I have ever seen."

Read more about Space Giraffe here.

Oh yeah, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is also available for download!

Jack - Um... in your Rapture pictures..... I see plenty of monkeys, and even Beaker.  BUT, where is Puppa Brown??  He has been intrusted to your care - albeit against your knowledge.  I'll need to see a current photo of him, happy and healthy, or else the proper authorities will be called.

Didn't the Superfriends always talk about the 'proper authorities'???  Shit, ninja - you are the Superfriends, part of the Justice League.  Isn't that proper enough?

Well, the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta is full on sweet!  It's a cross between Counter-Strike and the recent rainbow six games.  I like it more than the latter as it's a bit faster paced and seems a little more arcadey.  It's a ton of fun, even though I'm abysmally bad at it - I struggle to make it into the middle of the rankings from round to round.  Just don't have the reflexes I used to...

I was curious what this Portal game on the Orange Box was and found this demonstration video. It looks kinda fun. I may have to partake. Plus I feel a bit guilty for not finishing Half-Life 2 on X-box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpdCi5XpCsE

This looks like it was designed by M.C. Escher.  It does look like fun but it makes mybrain hurt.

Portal is going to be sweet - from what I heard, it was some kind of computer science project that ended up getting sold to Valve (the makers of Half-Life).  Remains to be seen how it could be incorporated into a real FPS, since Portal is its own standalone puzzle game.

I must once again encourage everyone to get the Orange Box Wednesday.  I can't wait!  Watching the trailers for Team Fortress 2 (the second one is jaw-droppingly awesome, IMO), I have a feeling I'm not going to be going back to Halo 3 for a while.

From: Ross Entered on: October 10, 2007 2:19 PM

The reviews for the Orange Box are coming in and they're saying it's sweet!  IGN has a bold (but IMO believable) statement:

If there's one must buy game of the year, it is, without a doubt, The Orange Box. All five components are excellent, with Half-Life 2 and Episode Two being the two finest single-player first-person shooters on Xbox 360.

Heather picked me up my copy today while I'm slavin' away, workin' fo da man to bring home the bacon!   Can't wait to get home and play!

MSNBC has a really good review of "The Orange Box" as well. t really sounds like a fun game.

Bert!  So you're back to work?  You're not the mama anymore?  Your absence on Live was noticed last night.  Angie went back to work today -- And ironically enough, now I'm the mama!  To a point.  Now I get Anna up in the morning, get her dressed and ready for her daycare (which fortunately enough is Angie's sister Kristy, or sometimes our friend Jessica... ain't trustin' just anyone with our little one!).

I'm hoping to get The Orange Box soon too.  Though I'm still loving Halo 3 (and even Gears!) so who knows.

From: Ross Entered on: October 10, 2007 5:15 PM

Well, my dilemma with Orange Box was whether to jump right in to Episode 2 or play thru all 3 games, in order, which is what I think I'm going to do.  IGN says that HL's graphics look a little dated on the 360 (though I can testify that on my PC, they're awesome), the game itself it easily top-5 shooters of all time.  So since it's been a couple years since I've played it, I'm going to give it another go-round.

But I will be trying out Team Fortress 2 on Live tonight, in all likelihood.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: November 19, 2007 3:43 PM

I've finally found some time to dedicate to The Orange Box and have been playing Half-Life 2.  This game is, of course... SWEET!  Even JohnnyBells has been taking turns playing it with me.

Bert - I know you were herny for Team Fortress 2 (also part of Orange Box), but you've been quiet about it since it's release.  Rad & I tried it yesterday for little bit.  It didn't get me too excited.  Have you played it much?  I know you're all about Call of Duty 4: Tom Clancy is a Bitch right now, but wondered if it was worth trying more.

From: BigFatty Entered on: November 19, 2007 4:43 PM
I don't get the Tom Clancy comment.  Please explain.....  I liked his games...  Did he do COD now?

From: Jackzilla Entered on: November 19, 2007 5:08 PM

Fats - It's part of Rad & I's progression of names for games.   We really enjoyed Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas and nick-named it Tom Clancy's A Whole Lot Of Shit Going On.  The new COD is really cool and also has an unbelievable amount of mayhem going on -- making the Clancy game look like a bitch in comparison (not really, but it gets the point across that COD4 is sweet), thus Call of Duty 4: Tom Clancy Is A Bitch was born.

You miss out on a lot of vernacular hijinks living in Hungary.  When you moving back?

From: Ross Entered on: November 19, 2007 5:17 PM
TF2 is sweet - but it had lag issues at first, which have (reportedly) been fixed with a patch.  But in that time, as you guessed, COD4 came out and has supplanted all other games on the must-play list.  I will go back to TF2 at some point soon - I definitely liked it a lot, though it needs more maps.

From: Jackzilla Entered on: November 19, 2007 5:31 PM
Now that you mention it Rad was complaining of lag issues on TF2 when we played it yesterday (and he's got a sweet connection).
