I definitely won't be an early adopter (and I still have about a year on my Verizon plan), but I have to admit that since AT&T sent me a link to the guided tour, I kind of got excited to try it.  The video is very markety and I want to kick the narrator's ass (if for no other reason than he's wearing the Steve Jobs black longsleeve t-shirt) but overall the phone still seems very cool.  For me, it all boils down to how well they can get past the lack of tactile feedback.

My boss is a pretty big Apple fan but even he isn't jumping on right away without some proper reviews and testimonials.  Isn't Jones going to get one?

I'm sure that Johnnybells, being a shill for Verizon, will tell us how the iPhone sucks.

For anyone who stands in line for an iphone, let me know so I can come and throw marshmellows at you.  iphone is cool, but not $500 cool.

I have no cellphone.  I have no ipod.  And yet, despite what many folks may think, I don't live in the woods wiping my butt with leaves.

I have no desire for an iphone. I can't imagine having something worth more than my Xbox 360 travelling arround in my pocket all day.

That's what a warranty is for, but yeah, I get the point.  I'm not so concerned about that though as with usability.  And although they claim they improved the battery life substantially, I'll still wait to see what real world users have to say.  I've been burned by shitty battery phones (RAZR) lately and I can only guess that having one device for music and phone will be murder on power consumption.  Though, to be honest, this is the device that I've been saying I've wanted for the past 7 or 8 years.  Right around the time the I got my very first MP3 player, I realized that it was one too many devices to carry around, and it should be combined with a phone and PDA.  Granted, there have been many music-enabled phones over the years, but the iPhone appears to be the first to meld them all successfully.  But we'll see.

I think your lack of desire for an iPod/cellphone can be explained thusly: you rarely leave Lowell.  You don't have a lengthy commute, nor or are you routinely required to leave your town for any real length of time.  For urban dwellers, an iPod helps pass the time on a commute (be it on a train or in a car) and to some extent, so does a cellphone, which is also useful for times when you aren't near a landline and need to be in contact with others.

So I think it makes sense that you don't need/want an iPod.  I still think it's odd you don't see the need for a cellphone, especially since I can't imagine that there aren't times that your friends or family wish you had one.  But to each their own, I suppose.

But dude!  BSG is sweet!

Whaddaya mean you don't like cell phones? Cell phones taste good!

I`d drop 500 on a cell phone if it was small as fuck, had good battery life, and good call quality. After that, camera, MP3 player, email, I could give a farm. On a seperate note. I`m typing this from the United lounge in Tokyo. I`ll elaborate more on my times of international intrigue at the US embassay and what not when I`m back home and not typing on a Japanese computer with Kanji all over the fucker. ?¢?¦?????????¥?¢???Ö?è?¨ Bitches!!!!!

My friend bought the Iphone and let me test drive it. I have to admit it's a cool little motherfucker. I can only describe the functions as pure witchcraft. I'm certain aliens assisted Apple on this one. It's got sweet email and text capability. The video is awesome. In essence it's a fully functional Ipod with all the PDA accessories to boot. I'd spend the extra $100 and get the 8GB to make sure I have enough room for all my shit. It syncs up to your wireless network or some other shitty netweork if you are around town outside a hotspot.

I'm too lazy to write about the sweetness in it's entirety but suffice it to say I'm buying one.

Clearly, the iPhone is the result of reverse-engineered Autobot technology.

Is the screen made of some new material that doesn't leave fingerprints and such?  It seems like it'd get messy when to operate it you have to run you fingers all over it.

From: Ross Entered on: July 3, 2007 8:55 AM
My boss did end up getting one but he's staying home all week to play with it by himself, the bastard.  One other guy in the office got one but I'm yet to get a tutorial.  I have to say that I'm pretty excited to get one as well, though the slow data network is annoying.  I just have to wait till my Verizon contract expires.

Maybe he stayed home so he could have his Happy-Time with it.

The screen is an advanced polymoer created in the bowels of Mordor. It doesn't scratch but fingerprints show up. It's not bad when it's on butshows more hwne it's in sleep mode and the screen turns black.

Size wise, it's a little longer and wider than a razr but is actually a little thinner. Of course it's much heavier but if you are a pda type of guy it's much better, although at the moment I don't think it has games.

Even with all my satyre, I would kill someone where they stood if I knew it would get me an Iphone.  Problems be damned.  At least I would have an edge on the technology wheel for about a month.

Hahahahahah!

I resist the thought of even wanting an iPhone because of the idiotic consumer frenzy around it. The reactionary in me wants to say "fuck that shit" and use tin cans and string and an 8-track player. I'm still old-school enough to actually like CDs. Not because I have a zillion of the fucking things, but because they sound better than MP3s to my ears. That's why I still don't have an iPod, and wipe my butt with leaves.

Admittedly, the iPhone looks sweet, but still, I can think of better things to spend 500 bucks on.

From: Ross Entered on: July 3, 2007 9:21 PM

Dude, seriously, it's in your head if you think you can tell the difference between an high-rate MP3 and a CD.

Seriously.

From: The Bone Entered on: July 3, 2007 10:29 PM

Is there anything more worthy of discussion than buttshows?

Seriously, I hate on whatever is popular just to go against the grain but the Iphone is seriously sweet and easily upgradeable in order to stay ahead of the curve.

Don't spend $500 on 4gb when you can have 8gb for $600. Can't afford not to. Going to buy me one this weekend and have buttsex with pretty girls as a direct result.

From: Ross Entered on: July 3, 2007 11:49 PM

Yes, I'm sure the pretty girls care about the finer aspects of multitouch technology and the tradeoffs between wifi hotspots and the EDGE network.  Sure to get you laid, you start jibber-jabbering about that shit.

The bottom line Swerb (and other haters) is that even though it is inarguably overhyped, the iPhone is a very exciting piece of technology.  And if technology is your bag, it's perfectly understandable that you might want one.

As for the cost, it's actually not expensive at all considering what you're getting: a phone, an iPod, and a frickin computer.  You can argue that you wouldn't spend $500-600 on such a device, but for people that do actually want to use these bits of tech and do prize those features, it's actually a bargain.

From: Swerb Entered on: July 4, 2007 11:31 AM

OK - I'm not a hater. I admit, it looks pretty damn sweet, and the fact that it overcame The Wang's skepticism says something. The thing that bugs me about technology is that I feel like I'm constantly chasing it. As soon as I buy a new fill-in-the-blank (TV/remote control/DVD drive/satellite receiver/etc.), something sweeter comes out three months later. It's enough to make you throw your hands in the air and become a technophobe.

Plus, it's a sinkhole for money, and the conspiracy theorist in me says that once you buy a product, it's an in to sell you more and more upgrades and bilk you of even more of your cash in an unending cycle of marketing ploys... So anyway, has anyone heard of the new toilet paper technology? It's literally falling off the trees in your backyard.

From: Swerb Entered on: July 4, 2007 12:04 PM
Sort of my point...

From: The Bone Entered on: July 4, 2007 10:42 PM

On one hand I totally agree with you Swerb. I bought a Motorola RAZR last year and although it works perfectly fine, I'm jonesing  for the Iphone. On the other hand, I travel a lot and I really don't like lugging my computer around just to check email and surf pron. At $600 you get a phone, video player, MP3 player, and computer. Fuck, that's a deal.

I went to the Apple store today and low and behold, they were out. I'm slightly perterbed because surely Apple could keep there stores stocked. My guess is they are limiting availability to generate buzz and demand. Fuck them, I was going to by thier shit today but who knows when I'll get around to it now.

From: Ross Entered on: July 5, 2007 10:02 AM
If you would have gone a day or two after they went on sale, you'd have been in luck.  People actually camped out to get them, so if they were worried about supply, it's no surprise they're out of stock by now.

From: Eric Entered on: July 6, 2007 11:16 AM

You guys are seriously getting all excited about the iPhone?  So is is made by Apple and therefore 'sexy', but for $400 you can get an HTC Mogul which actually is a computer and a phone and a media player, instead of a device that is locked down to like 8 apps, and can browse the web on a really slow connection.

The touch screen is cool, but I'd wait and see what happens after a month or so of use.  Maybe Apple will keep throwing cool new features on it, or maybe people will realize the touch screen sucks for doing 'real' stuff.

You can't call a phone a computer if it can't cut and paste. :)

The iPhone is just a cool iPod that you can browse the web on and make calls.  That is different from a 'computer'.  If you want a computer get a smart phone, if you want an iPod get an iPhone.

Ross will you be upgrading to the new iPhone? The new 8-gigabyte will be $199 and the 16-gigabyte will drop to $299 beginning July 11th.

The battery life still appears to blow. I may have to eat my words and ditch my current personal phone and get the iPhone. I currently have the Blackjack and it sucks. I  live off my work Blackberry anyhow and it has my email and crap tied into it, and work foots the bill.

From: Ross Entered on: June 10, 2008 8:03 AM

I used to have a blackberry via work but I gave it up.  I've been clean for 6 months now. :)

So far, I see no reason to upgrade.  Sure, it would be nice to have faster-than-dialup speeds when I'm out and about, but most of the time (at work and home), I do have wi-fi available, and the slow Edge network for AT&T is still useable.  What really chaps my ass is that it's half the price of what I paid less than 6 months ago!

That said, if I didn't have an iPhone, I would definitely get one once the new ones are released.  This is a no-brainer, now.

From: Bunky Entered on: June 10, 2008 8:48 AM

Yeah, the price reduction is annoying for current iPhone owners. I just bought my niece a Blackberry and accessory bundle for graduation and considered the iPhone for a second, but the price was a bit steep for a 18 year old.  She is going off to college and I could not have her leaving with a Nokia flip phone....

Had I purchased the the iPhone, Fatty would be posting video of me in the ATT store after the announcement of the price reduction...

I am a bit retarded and cannot figure out how to post a photo from my documents folder, otherwise I would post a picture of the sweet pink XBOX 360 controller cake I had custom made for her graduation party.

Trust me, Bunks...  Posting from your hard drive is a long and convoluted process.  It is easiest to upload it to Flickr and then post it like any normal web photo....  like a welder photo found on Google images......

long and convoluted? Really? It's two blanks! One for the pic, one for the description. How much easier (or faster) does it need to be?

I can post from Google images Fats... I prefer to think the photo is of you... It makes "our" time together more special...

Yes - from the web it is easy.  Unless you changed things and forgot to tell Fatty, to load a photo from my home PC, First, open up the JA My Files site, create a folder, upload the file, find the file, copy the image link (which I always get wrong) then go back to JA and paste the image location in the little Tree box.

Oh..... wait.... That is only for posting it inside a thread.  If you want to do it the old-fashioned way then it is way easier...

Why two blanks??  Well one doesn't do nothing.  Two does tons of shit.
