New PS2 Coming Soon
Entered on: May 28, 2003 2:41 PM by Ross
I dunno boys, the specs for the new PS2 (this is not even the PS3) make it out-of-the-box sweeter than an Xbox, if you ask me. Granted, the CPU/memory of the PS2 isn't as good as the xbox, but it makes up for it in other ways. Check out the specs:

The only question as to whether it will be worth getting is if it will be as hackable as the Xbox.

There is an article with a little more info here. It looks like it's selling this thing mainly as a DVD player/Tivo device. If it allows me to do what Tivo does, plus record shows to its DVD burner, I will buy one whether I can hack it or not!

How much is this thing gonna be? It won't be 200 bucks.

No doubt. From the parts they're putting in, and depending on to what extent they do Microsoft Economics, I'd figure it like this:

Base Unit: $180 (current price, ignoring ethernet jack, USB, etc.)
120 GB HDD: $80 (if they score a deal with WD, Seagate, etc to buy in bulk)
TV Tuner: $50
DVD Burner: $200 (same as HDD deal)
----------------------------------------------
$510.

Depending on how much they're willing to lose on each unit solely to gain market share, they could sell it for $400, I'd bet. I think that's about what MS loses on each Xbox they sell.

Sounds pretty sweet, but I think I will stick with my box. Besides, there is no Halo for PS2 and that sucks. I know Prepubert, you love GTA Vice City, as do I. That is one game I wish would come out for the X- Box. In fact it will in the future won't it?

Isn't some super computer genious developing a PS2 emulator for XBOX?

There now are rumors afoot that Rockstar has renegotiated their agreement with Sony resulting in GTA coming out on the Xbox within a year.

Regarding a PS2 emulator on Xbox: It'll never happen. Though the box is more powerful than a PS2 it is not powerful enough to emulate the PS2 in real-time. We'll have to settle for the PS1 emulator.

I just played BRUTE FORCE some more with my brother today. That's a sweet game. I look forward to a 4-player co-op game night... followed with Deathmatch action!

First - Jack is definitely right. Xbox can't emulate something as powerful as a PS2. They're too close in functionality to get away with it without SERIOUS slowdown.

And yeah, I just started playing Brute Force (even got Heather to play some in co-op mode with me, though she's bitching about not being able to master the controls) and it's fun! I'm really liking it. I wish we would have played it Saturday night, we were avoiding it with 9 but after a while we had 6 and we should have played it some more.

Just to change the subject from gawking Bone, I resumed playing Blood Omen 2 and i'm loving it. I beat that vampire I was stuck on, beat the next level and then beat Magnus. You were right, it gets more fun as you go along. I now have all my powers and enjoy immolating my opponents. I'm 80% through the device and moving along. I'm eager to see how it ends.

Oh, by the way Bone, any tips you might have for the end of the game would be welcomed.

Dammit, this is one game I forgot to get from you Jack! Also, I forgot to get MGS2 from you, too.

I'm fighting the Sarafan Lord right now in Blood Omen 2. He is quite a pain in the ass. Throw me a bone Tony if you have any ideas. Right now I evade his energy bursts and hit him with my telekinis. I then jump over to him and try to hit him. I usually get a couple of hits in and he teleports away leaving no damage to him. This goes on and on. How did you beat this guy Bone?

Anyone started playing Hulk yet? I am loving this game! I've stopped playing everything else in favor of it. I know that I must sound pretty easily distracted, but this game is definitely keeping my attention. I even like it more than Brute Force, somehow, don't ask me how. I think it's just that the Hulk fucks shit up constantly - there seems to be no end to the amount of shit you can destroy. Thumbs up on this one.

Ross - Johnny and I played that last week. You're right -- It IS fun! They did a great job making you feel like the Hulk. He FEELS big and powerful when you play it! We got up to the second Banner mission where you have to sneak past the guards and Hell Hounds and stuff. I only wish that when Banner got hurt they let you turn into the Hulk and have a little fun before saying "Mission Failed."

Have you tried Bloody Roar Extreme yet? Those Japanese games sure can get wack. I think I'll stick to Tao Fang and Soul Calibur 2 for fighting right now.

My brother Tom has like one mission to go in Brute Force. He's logged in 14 hours playing it solo. We played it last night on HARD (the medium setting) and it gets TOUGH! It's a fun game. I get a kick out of Tex too.

BONE - What're you playing? Is the BONEBOX getting some play or what?! Any fav games?

I too give the Hulk a big thumbs up. Zilla and I had quite a bit of fun when we played it.

Zilla cut me a disc with the Hulk on it but as it turned out it was no good. This of course was disappointing since I was looking forward to playing it. Zilla is cutting a new disc for me and I will pick it up tomorrow. I can't wait to play this one.

You know, I got Bloody Roar at the same time I got Hulk, and I loved Hulk so much, I haven't even had time to even test out Bloody Roar. It's a cheapie, though, so I'm not expecting much anyway.

By the way, I beat Hulk last night. Turns out that I was near the end from all the playing I did last weekend and I only had like 2 boss fights before finishing. Also I am not ashamed to admit that I cheated on those fights because I'm not about replaying a level 30 times to beat it. In fact, I shit on boss fights. It's not creative. Anyway, the game gets a thumbs up. Very fun.

Now I'm back to Brute Farce and possibly will try my hand again at the driving mission in Enter the Matrix if I get some time.
