New Feature, as Promised
Entered on: April 29, 2006 2:14 AM by Ross
I finally got it installed: the new text editor, thanks to TinyMCE. Right now it's only installed for comments. I know how painful it is adding new photos/news entries and I plan to upgrade those to use this thing as well, as soon as I'm sure kinks are worked out on the comments.

It could be a little buggy, so be sure to let me know if you discover problems with the editor.

Some nifty features:

  • Colors!
  • Bold, Italic, Underline
  • New and exciting fonts and font sizes!
  • Inserting Images - use the little tree icon. You can link to any image on the web and insert it into your comment.
  • Linking still should work the way it always has, but a more elegant solution is to select some text in your comment and hit the "link" button (looks like a chain). There you can turn your text into a link, like this.
  • Full screen editing! Hit the last button on the bottom right to try it.
  • Previewing your comment - hit this button:
  • And much more! Please let me know if you have any problems. I'm trying to figure out how this thing works so I can use it more effectively on other sites I work on.

Feel feel to give it a whirl by adding some test replies to this. Thank you and good night.

Oh, who could forget:  Smileys!

 Laughing

They're not the best smileys, really.  If you guys can find any other free online ones, I can probably work them in.

There's also a "paste from word" button, but I haven't tried it.  Fatty, I know you liked to compose in word and paste it in, you might want to give it a try.

By the way, does editing your own comments work for you guys?  I just realized that the "edit comment" link doesn't seem to work in IE for me - but I always use Firefox and don't usually test against IE.  Does it work for you guys, or do you all use Firefox too?

I use Firefox too.

Speaking of which, Bert, have you seen the cool plug-in for Firefox that lets you right-click a video and "SEND TO XBMC" (it'll play on your xbox thru Xbox Media Center).  Sweet beans.  XBMC rocks.

I haven't seen that, no.  Does it actually initiate the playing process on the Xbox remotely, from the PC?

Not sure how much I'd really need that, though - I download all my media to a central server and the xboxes/PCs all have mapped locations to that location.

Or does it allow you to right-click a video that's embedded on a web page?  That might be interesting! Got a link?

Wow, Look at all the buttons!!!  Cool  Pretty cool Bert!  Oh, looks like when you pick a smiley, it reverts your text back to normal.  Are you able to add customized buttons?  This is super cool as it is.  Could you add a sarcastic button - a button that italicsizes text and bookends it with *  *?  I don't know why I thought of that, its not like we use it a lot.  It just popped into my head.

I hate to say this, but it looks like we are on the way to a spellchecker!!!  If you could develop one of those, your other sites would be WAY better than anything else out there!!!

Bert - your sweetness stock just hit a new high.

Dude, this thing comes with a spellchecker, but I currently have it disabled (lots of sites have them). I disabled it cuz I think it either only works in IE or else you need to be running your site in PHP, whereas this site is in Java.  In any case, there is this tool that I think I could probably plug in to get a spellchecker going.  We'll see.  I'm already over my contract for this month on Jackassery features as it is...
