Xbox breaks the 137 gig barrier!
Entered on: August 31, 2003 12:20 AM by Jackzilla
Looks like we got us some hacking motherfuckers over at xbox-scene! Some guy is hacking the BIOS to allow harddrives bigger than 137 gig. SWEET! I'm gonna start watching for deals on big ass hard drives in the Sunday paper!

That's pretty sweet! I'm actually feeling the pinch with my paltry 80GB... I might do the upgrade too - but I couldn't tell if you need a new modchip or if it's a software modification? Jack?

Anyway, I picked up one of those 120GB drives from CompUSA which is like $80 after rebates. The new Ross Rig is stocked with four drives totalling 380GB. On the downside, the power draw from my house is crippling the entire nation...

Initially the 137-GIG-FIX looks to be a patch to the BIOS. But the dude is gonna make his code available to the BIOS hackers so ther'll be an updated Xecuter BIOS soon I would think.

380 gig... not bad. Networked together I have: 120+100 (ZillaStation) + 120 (ZillaBox) + 120 (FunkBox) + 13 + 4 (ElmerStation/Sulu) = 477!

Hey Ross, can I stick more than 2 hard drives into my Sony?

That was a single machine, Jack.

380 in Ross rig + 80 (xbox) + 20 (laptop) + 30 (laptop 2) + 180 (rosstation) + 40 (heather) + 40 (jackassery server) = 770GB. Or, more eloquently, 3/4 Terabyte.

Jack - usually your motherboard/power supplies support 4 drives total. I don't know the specifics of your machine, though. A lot of newer motherboards have additional IDE controllers onboard which would let you put 4 more IDE drives in (mine does, for example). If yours doesn't, it's an easy matter to pick up a PCI card for your computer that acts as an additional IDE controller. At that point, you just have to worry about your power supply having enough power connections for all those drives. I had to go to Best Buy today to get a Y adapter to hook up one of my drives, as most supplies support only 4 or maybe 5 IDE devices and I have 6. The adapters run maybe $5, though. You just have to make sure you're not over-taxing your power supply, though. Mine is probably being worn ragged, at 350W, with 6 drives in it. Oh well.

Have you guys seen/heard that there's going to be a Daredevil game out for the consoles? It's based on the comics, not the movie, which is a relief. As far as I know, there's only been 1 screen shot released, which is so-so in my opinion. Anyway, they just put up a website for the game:
